Brad Hewitt has been named the new President and CEOof Thrivent for Lutherans. So? A graduate of UW - River Falls,he also attended Harvard where he earned a certificate in Program for Magement Development. He was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Concordia U.,St.Paul. His ties to Valpo are unknown, but he is a member of the LCMS.This, along with the hiring of Carlson ,also a Lutheran, establishes Valpo as once again being the premier Lutheran affiliated University. Sorry Rick, but I personally have mucho bucks invested with Thrivent and Valpo so I don't give a damn about the Pres. of Providence College and his preaching. Go Valpo!

Wait, if Hewitt's ties to Valpo are unknown, what does that have to do with "establish[ing] Valpo as once again being the premier Lutheran affiliated University"?

I think he is talking about Hewitt being a member of the LCMS. Seeing as Thrivent is a Lutheran Fraternal and the fact that Valpo is neither a LCMS or ELCA school, I don't understand his point either. My guess is that he is tieing Hewitt to Valpo via Valpo's historic ties to the LCMS through its LCMS Lutheran founders (in 1925) As a matter of fact, more of our current board members are ELCA members not LCMS

Interesting - didn't know that about the board.
I still think of Valpo as a "mostly LCMS" Lutheran university, with an interesting position somewhere in between the LCMS and the ELCA on a variety of issues.
The ELCA certainly doesn't seem to strongly embrace the school (e.g. in the annual college issue of "The Lutheran" Valpo's not featured, unless they take out an ad, which they usually do).

Remember that the ELCA ans LCMS for that matter, have their own schools to support. They aren't going to go out of their way to support Valpo.
That's what make Valpo so unique and truly independent. We now have clergy from both groups on staff and many ELCA members on the faculty.

Not sure, but i think nThrivent discontinuied their matching program for donations made by members or at least changed it for 2010. Either way,it will hurt universities.
