What a mess of a "conference". A D1 conference in training. Currently ranked 33 out of 33 (including the independents) in the Sagarins. There is nothing "great" or "west" about this group. Better to call it the great "east" (New Jersey Tech), "west" (Utah Valley), "north" (South Dakota and North Dakota) and "south" (Texas Pan American and Houston Baptist) and while were at it, why not "Midwest" (Chicago State)! So, it would be The Great East, West, North, South and Midwest Conference. Now that is a mouth full! Why in the world did Chicago State leave the Summit? Certainly the travel is no better and now there isn't a bus ride in sight. What a mess.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing a few weeks ago when I was looking at some of the rankings (Sagarin, Pomeroy, etc.). Lame excuse for a conference. Will any team have an above 0.500 record in Division I this year? Does anyone know if or when this conference will get a bid into the NCAA tournament? It would be a shame if they do. I never did understand Chicago St. leaving the Summit, unless they were planning to go down in NCAA divisions. It appears Chicago St. is staying in Division I, why I don't know.

I think this group came together a year ago, officially in mid to late 2008. I would think they need at least 5 years to qualify for the NCAAs. Not really sure though. The conference is a combined 29-101 against D1 compitition with South Dakota being the leader (ranked 238 in the Sagarin's, at 8-9. Interestingly, Ed Grom is the Commissioner. Wasn't he part of the Mid-Con? Maybe its commissioner?

Chicago State did not leave the Summit League. Nitpick: They left the Mid-Con Truth: They didn't leave the Mid-Con. They were kicked out for violating conference rules regarding minimal support of all conference sports, or something like that.

Beyond the name....there were several decent reasons for these guys to form a league. 1. No one can make the tourney as an independent. 2. This allows for home and home scheduling late in the year when everyone else is in league play. 3. They might, big might, become an automatic bid. Certainly if the tourney expands they might. 4. Everyone in the league knows anyone will leave at the offer of any oppotunity. Everyone has the same agenda.

I believe they do have an auto-bid.... to the CIT (or the CBI?)

If I recall correctly, The Great West Conference formed because those schools wanted to be in a conference to help with their scheduling abilities. These teams could get more guarantee games with a conference affiliation, rather than just being Chicago St., Houston Baptist, N.J.I.T., North Dakota, etc. Yeah, it is a geographical nightmare, but it helps these schools form an identity, and it could help them get into some of the conferences in the areas where these schools are.
