I was hoping to get some Valpo fan help.
I am possibly going to be taking a job up in NWI and really don't have any feel for the best places to live up there.
Any advice?
I don't want to get much further east than Chesterton. To the west, into Illinois would be fine as well. My family situation requires a house and yard sort of a situation, so in the city probably isn't going to work.

I would say you want to look at the southern Lake County area of Dyer/St. John/Schererville (Lake Central school system), southern part of Crown Point, Lake of the Four Seasons, Lowell and Cedar Lake. In Porter County look at Valpo-Wheeler area, South Haven, Chesterton, Hebron, maybe eastern Portage (but stay out of western Portage). I would stay out of Munster, Merrillville and Griffith if you are not really looking for something "in the city."
In Illinois look at Sauk Village, Crete, Monee and Beecher area. Hope this helps.

Jerome gives some good advice. If you have kids, you need to decide if you'd like them in a big system or a small system. From all accounts, even from the people there, LC is TOO big and they have a big "divisiveness" problem once the 3 middle schools filter into the high school. Crown Point is also getting really big. Boone Grove has a decent school system, but if you're going to go small, Kouts is probably the strongest academically and not bad for sports. Of course, I'm biased toward the Valpo school system not only for academics but also sports. It's not as big as LC, and it also is great for the arts with award-winning band, choir, drama on top of things like science olympiad. Chesterton would be my second choice in Porter County, plus it's close to 94 and the toll road if you need to go into Chicago.

Hope you can find a job elsewhere, because NWI stands for NOT WORTH IT. Still, if you decide to come to NWI,Valpo is the place to live.
