I thought Ali played very well in the first half. I thought that he may have tired down the stretch -- I think he logged more minutes last night than has been usual for him. Also the refs allowed a lot of slapping while he was trying to break the press.

I attribute the collapse to one thing. You all might think I'm nuts, but the tide turned when Hunter turned on the press in the full court. IUPUI was trapping VU like crazy and the boys couldn't handle it. They'd dribble right into a corner and pick up the dribble. Throw bad passes to get out of the trap, stuff like that. It looked like they got so frustrated with that press that it just took their heads right out of the game. If Homer can't adjust to a simple full-court press, then we're in trouble. VU looked like a completley different team after that.

The play by play doesn't bear out your theory. I thought that we could have attacked the press more aggressively, but generally we handled it pretty well. What hurt us more were the foul calls and IUPUI hitting shots that one would not expect them to hit.

What hurt us more were the foul calls and IUPUI hitting shots that one would not expect them to hit. They've been the victim of terrible officiating the past two games. Unfortunately, the bad calls Saturday didn't come until the end of the game when VU needed those three players to stay in the game. Still, being there and watching that press, it just seemed to me that it really had an effect on them. There were times they got through it, but those times IUPUI let up, a bit. IUPUI and OU both have hit shots they probably shouldn't have hit. But again, VU tended to play too far off the guys who were making those shots. I have another theory ... IUPUI began making those shots and getting some momentum when Homer went to a zone defense. VU plays such great defense (usually) when they're in a man and it always seems like they let teams back into the game whenever they switch to a zone. I know you can't play man the whole game — it would kill you stamina-wise — but does anyone else see a big drop-off when VU goes to the zone?

Not at all. The only way to stop Green and Owens when we played them was by use of the zone, and we did it effectively. Huff played a big role in the middle denying the ball and creating turnovers. We miss him.
