I was talking to one of the existing assistant coaches last night and he told me that the University has received over 80 resumes for the vacant head coaching job and had over 120 inquiries....He felt that they should be looking for a younger coach who wanted to build a reputation and was moving up. Not sure what the search committee wants, since their stated preference is 5 years of experience.....It's not surprising to me that so many coaches are interested in the job. If you can build a program here it certainly would help your coaching resume.

Only 5 years coaching experience for a job at this level would not be enough. It is no wonder they have so many resumes.

I think 5 years is only a starting point, but like you said, let's hope that there is someone out there with more experience, even if it came from multiple schools.

What was Brian Kelly when he took over Grand Valley State - 29 years old? What are the common skill sets that Kelly, Tressel, and Paul Johnson had when they became head coaches at less than Division I-A schools. Those are the characteristics we need to identify, they look for in candidate. If a 30 year old has those skills, charisma, and references from respected people in the football coaching community, then VU needs to give said person a chance. The last three coaching hires have been less than stellar.

The five year thing could be misleading. If we found a guy with five year as an asst at, say, Ohio State, tat we wouldn't be interested?
We need a guy who can get kids excited about playing ball at Valpo and then deliver the skills to translate to victory on the field.
Mark LaBarbera has had a couple of great hires and although he picked Stacy Adams, he had virtually no choice given the circumstances surrounding Horne's departure and the start of the season.
We should know something soon...I think he will bring in a proven winner.

[glow=red,2,300][/glow] The five year thing could be misleading. If we found a guy with five year as an asst at, say, Ohio State, tat we wouldn't be interested ???Probably makes more money than Valpo pays head coach. We need a guy who can get kids excited about playing ball at Valpo and then deliver the skills to translate to victory on the field. ???And somebody that will stay around for a while. Mark LaBarbera has had a couple of great hires and although he picked Stacy Adams, he had virtually no choice given the circumstances surrounding Horne's departure and the start of the season. ???What does he know about football? I assume he has had experience with football at previous jobs? We should know something soon...I think he will bring in a proved winner. You would think there would be something leaking out? Who has applied? Who is on the selection committee? I am excited for Valpo and hope they get a very good coach.
