Check out Dane Fife's assessment of the relative merits of the Summit and Horizon Leagues.
He might as well have said: "Sure, the Horizon League has won 14 NCAA Tournament games in the last nine years and our league's only two wins are held by a school that's now a member of the Horizon, but we're looking for any rope to latch onto.
"Please, please get us the hell out of this infernal league before it goes up in flames. I mean seriously, North and South Dakota!"

I've always seen the Summit as a whole wanting to be the Horizon League. Hell, when we changed from the Midwestern Collegiate Conference to the Horizon, it was about 5 years before the Mid-Continent Conference changed to the Summit.
Why? Because they want people across the country to confuse the two.
We should look at this as a form of flattery. Schools actively and openly want to join the Horizon League.

I seriously doubt that the Mid-Con thought anything at all about the name of the league in relation to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.....the name change was because it didn't make sense because of where the schools are located and the distance between some of them....There is no doubt that the Horizon is a much better league, but the name had nothing to do with that.....as far as IPFW, they were begging the old Mid-Con to take them for years and were refused on at least two occassions. Only admitted because Valparaiso left and except for Oral Roberts took the only "name" school out of the conference. IPFW hasn't won anything in that league yet, so why they think they can compete in the Horizon is beyond me.....

IPFW hasn't won anything in that league yet, so why they think they can compete in the Horizon is beyond me..... Maybe because they are 2-0 against us the last 2 years. I will never forget last year's debacle at Fort Wayne. I looked up some details: - We led by 11 (67-56) with 6:07 remaining - BWood picked up a tech. for taunting the IPFW bench after he made a basket. Homer took him out. - We were outscored 19-5 over the last 6 minutes - We committed 5 fouls and 6 TO's - We scored 1 point over the last 4:11 - That 6 min. was the worst defensive effort I saw all year (and that's saying a lot) - I remember thinking we just GAVE away a game to a really weak team. - It was a long ride home. History WILL repeat itself this year if we don't somehow develop a passion to play defense. We may have 10 experienced players returning, but unfortunately we only have 2 that take pride in playing defense.

You guys were rebuilding the past 2 years. I don't think anyone is going to be too impressed that IPFW could beat the HL's 9th place team 2 years ago and 7th place team last year.

We finished the regular season tied for 4th - period. There are no tie breakers for regular season records in the Horizon League, only tie breakers to determine tournament seeding. That is unless you think Wright State and Butler were not named conference co-champs (meaning tied for 1st) in '06-07.

No one is going to be impressed that IPFW beat a rebuilding HL team that finished in a 4 way tie for 4th place.

I wasn't trying to infer that anyone should be impressed that they beat us. I was just recalling an embarrassing loss for us and the league we represent that gave IPFW's A.D. a talking point he never should have had.
