The Great West Conference has to be the most geographically challenged conference in the entire country. From their website: The Great West Conference is made up of 10 intercollegiate institutions that range geographically from New Jersey to Texas to California. The 10 member schools are spread out over seven states and four time zones, giving each school added exposure - both in terms of media and recruiting - in new destinations. The conference affiliation also generates much interest within the 10 institutions' substantial alumni base. The writer should be given an A for effort in trying to spin a 4 time zone, 3000 mile separation into something positive.

The thing that was failed to mention about the Great West Conference is that the conference is made entirely of schools that for the last 5 years + were independent, so they were calling every school they could to contract a game. These schools only felt a conference, regardless of geography, would help them in recruiting, and possibility of NCAA tournament auto-bid and potential for going on to a bigger, established conference later.

And for the moment, they've had to settle for an auto-bid to the CBI.

It was announced today that Jimmy Collins is going to retire in August. Weird timing with Dildy leaving UIC just a few weeks ago.

On the contrary, the UIC people don't want the Jimmy Collins tree to continue.

On the contrary, the UIC people don't want the Jimmy Collins tree to continue. I stand corrected. It was a fuzzy memory on my part to be sure. After I thought about it this morning, the most likely explanation was indeed the one that has been mentioned, namely that Dildy knew he wasn't going to be asked to succeed Collins.

I read some of the UIC posts about Dildy leaving, and the Collins retirement, and many of their posters are glad that Dildy went to Chicago St. They were critical of some of the recruits brought in the last few seasons due to academics, character, ability to play D-1 basketball, things like that. I don't know how much better Dildy will be at Chicago St., but if he saw the writing on the wall from the UIC administration, then he did the right thing. Best of luck to him...maybe he can get more than 50 Chicagoans to come to the games at their bigger campus arena, I'm just forgetting the name of it.

I definitely remember those sentiments being expressed. I guess I remembered opinions being expressed on Dildy, but could not remember if they were positive or negative.
