Franklin got beat today 30-27 by Carthage. Franklin also gave up 431 yards of total offense (341 via the air). I think this is a big opportunity for Valpo to come out and get their first win of the 2010 season.
Story from the Franklin College athletics website:
CARTHAGE RALLIES IN 2nd HALF TO EDGE FRANKLIN KENOSHA, Wis. (Sept. 4) – Host Carthage College today rallied from a 10-point second-quarter deficit to top Franklin College 30-27 in the 2010 football season opener for both schools.
The competitive contest was the first football meeting between the Red Men and the Grizzlies.
A resurgent offensive attack and what proved to be a costly roughing-the-punter penalty called on Franklin early in the second half were a couple of key factors in Carthage’s improved second-half fortunes.
The Red Men, who deferred at the pre-game coin toss, went backwards on their first three plays from scrimmage, but had their drive kept alive by the yellow flag, moving up to their 47-yard-line with a first down. Seven plays later, Carthage quarterback Evan Jones connected with Jerome Brown on a 20-yard touchdown scoring pass play – the host’s first TD of the day – tying the game at 13-13.
Carthage went up by a touchdown late in the third period when Jones hit Brown with another 20-yard strike, but Franklin quickly answered when senior quarterback Kyle
Ray (Trafalgar, Ind./Indian Creek H.S.) connected with sophomore split end Kyle
Linville (Speedway, Ind./H.S.) on a 45-yard scoring pass.
In fhe fourth quarter, the Red Men surged ahead 23-20 on a 25-yard field goal by Tyler Funk with 6:03 left and appeared to have some extra cushion when Jake Smith rushed for a 5-yard touchdown with 1:23 to go to make it 30-20. But
Ray needed only 43 seconds to move FC 71 yards, finding
Linville in the back of the end zone to pull Franklin to within a field goal.
But Carthage recovered the ensuing on-side kick to wrap it up.
Funk opened the scoring with a 38-yard field goal early in the opening period. Franklin moved ahead 6-3 on a pair of second-quarter field goals by sophomore kicker Cole
Richards (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central H.S.) (24 and 27 yards) before
Ray threw a 3-yard scoring toss to sophomore running back Kameron
Silcock (West Terre Haute, Ind./West Vigo H.S.).
The Red Men got back on the scoreboard with one second left in the opening half when Funk hit a 42-yard field goal.
Ray completed 21 of 30 passes for 229 yards and three scores while starting quarterback Nick
Purichia (Indianapolis, Ind./Cardinal Ritter H.S.), also a senior, completed 11 of 22 throws for 143 yards.
Linville had five receptions for 133 yards and a pair of scores and junior wingback Mitch
Deffner (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove H.S.) made five catches for 83 yards.
Franklin rolled up 462 yards of total offense to the Red Men’s 431. Both teams hampered their fortunes with penalties. The Grizzlies were flagged eight times for 86 yards while Carthage had nine whistles for 69 yards.
Leading Franklin’s defense were senior linebacker Luke
Hurst (Miamisburg, Ohio/Northmont H.S.) with 11 solo (and total) tackles and a fumble recovery, and junior linebacker David
O’Rourke (Evansville, Ind./Memorial H.S.), who nine solo tackles, including two sacks.
