It appears that our new spread offense is in reality a ZERO offense. No D either.,giving up 87 points in two games. If we don't beat St.Joe next week, its going to be an 0-11 season, BOOK IT!

Thank you, Captain Obvious!! We knew this would happen the first year, but I guess none of us expected them to have nothing to respond with on either side of the ball.

It clearly will be a long season. Not so sure about 0 - 11, but it probably won't be much better. Have to hope that the new players stick with it and that the recruiting class gets better. Homecoming should be a painful game - but I've seen plently of those so should be ready for it.

Coach Carlson's success has been based on a high scoring offense that makes little if few mistakes. He has to get the right athletes to make it happen- we need to give him some time.

I was suprised at the lack of progress from the WIU game to the Franklin game. It will take time for Coach Carlson's offense to work. As far as the defense goes....I think there was a regression this week. So far this season Coach Carlson has almost exclusively used veterans from the past regime to execute his schemes. The veterans may or may not be suited well for this type of offense. The team looked flat today in all phases of the game. The offense struggled to get first downs and looked out of sorts the entire game. The defense plays a very soft coverage and there is not much pressure on the opposing QB. The Franklin QB threw the ball at will today over the middle. I hope to see some much needed improvement vs. St.Joseph. It may be time to start creating more competition for sstarting pots in the line-up to spark playmakers.

What I expected to see was both offensives moving the ball and scoring a lot of points. I really don't think Valpo has the quarterback to do that. There were way too many mistakes made by the starting quarterback #17 and the sub-quarterbacks went in & did the same. They were trying to force plays to their best receivers and when those guys were covered they didn't trust their secondary receivers. I think the key is still for Carlson to find the quarterback he needs in his pass oriented offense to do the job. The last time Valpo won it seemed to be due to finding a quarterback that slipped by the other recruiters due to his size. We have to remember that these same players have lost a lot of games over the past 1, 2 or 3 years and they come with a defeatist attitude. Even a guy like Upshaw who played on multiple state championship teams knows there is a huge difference in the talent pool and he won with a running offense. Trying to get a player to buy into a system he hasn't seen work isn't impossible but it can be difficult. The Valpo team I saw took the field hasn't bought into Coach Carlson's attitude yet and they feel defeated before they hit the field. Coach Carlson is literally screaming at them to change the attitude and buy into it. That won't happen overnight. It will take the success of a few talented players and especially a quarterback, possibly a running back and big wide receiver to fill those needed rolls. Then the team will slowly buy into it. I have not lost any faith yet that Coach Carlson is the man for the job.

I think it is still a new system, and more of the younger players should get a chance to play. If you only score one touchdown in two games, mights as well rotate in new faces. This will take some time to right the ship.

Can't understand why Coach Carlson can't see that the guys he's been playing constantly aren't making things happen. There is talent on that team, not sure why he isn't giving the guys who really want to play the opportunity.

Out here in Iowa, there was a lot of hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth when Kirk Ferentz took over (1998, I think; maybe 1999). His first team was 1-10 and winless in the Big 10. They were terrible. The next year his team spent the first half of the season wallowing in the depths of last place in the conference again before they started to take off. Now you can count Ferentz as one of the best coaches in the Big 10, if not the nation. Give Coach C some time. We will come around. Paul

I'll agree that it will take time, but 340 yards...IN TWO GAMES is pretty pathetic. Let's hope they beat St. Joe (and I don't see it happening) because if not it's going to take a while for the losing streak (currently 11 games) to end.

Did read where St Jo had to end up playing a non-QB at QB after they started their #2 qb with #1 injured & during the game lost the #2 & #3. Don't know what the sitatus of the players will be,but doesn't look good for them.

I agree with footballfever! When you continue to use the same personnel and same play, are you expecting something different? Coach C says it is a new day, but it looks like the same old days. Actually worse, because last year the team was at least in games. A good coach is able to take the players that he is given and help them be successful. He may not have chosen them for the team, but he is choosing to play them. He may need to use techniques other than yelling. The team may feel defeated because of him.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Carlson has had two games....TWO....to change the culture of a losing program. The fact that he is using most of the experienced players he has at this point is not only not unexpected, but is no more than anyone else would do.....he will make the changes that are necessary as time goes along....Give him a chance....Troy Aikman was 1-15 his first year with Dallas and now he's in the Hall of Fame....not sure we'll ever have that kind of success, but some of these comments are not only unfair but ignorant....support your team and give the coaching staff a chance to implement their systems....it may take a couple of years, but after being around these coaches a couple of weeks, I think they are on the right track....so lighten up.....

Dick- It sounds to me like footballfever and vufbfan are parents of players that haven't seen much of the field the first two weeks, so I wouldn't put much stock into their "analysis" of the situation.

Another good example would be Coach Rodriguez and Michigan. They were horrible the first two years as he had to find the right players (and QB) for his system. There were complaints from the "old guard," calls for his head, indictments that his system wouldn't work in the Big 10(11)(12) and a change of culture (insert discussion on whether he skirts the rules) but the folks in NW Indiana saw this weekend the results of the start of that program when the right pieces are there. This is a long climb and Coach Carlson's results at other schools have followed similar patterns. The first year he has to clear out the old and install the new. Years 2 and 3 begin to see the improvement and then when his classes are juniors, seniors and superseniors, the success is obvious.
