Hooray for UCB. Cutting non revenue producing teams in order to more adequately fund academic programs is the way to go. Among sports programs being cut are baseball, men's rugby, others. Savings are expected to be in the $4 million range. Now, if VU would drop football, baseball (trip to Hawaii?) and some other programs we might be able to do the same - put more money into academics. I'm for it!

Thanks! I feel better about the whole trip. Now,if the team gets lei'd and also wins a few games, its mission accomplished. Good luck!

Not the 'get rid of sports' stuff again.

I've been a frequent reader and occasional contributor to this board for quite awhile now, and I'm still at a loss as to why this JJ character is around.

At Valpo open debate and different viewpoints are encourgaged. At third rate UWM,you probably don't even know what debate is(it all depends on the meaning of what "is" is). Do you?

At third rate UWM, I learned how to spell "encourage" and how to use proper grammar. My blue-collar parents taught me common human decency, something that seems to escape you.

Yeah, that's JJ.
But, let's forget about that, and about Valpo cutting sports, and turn back to the real news.
Cal-Berkeley is cutting Rugby? What?!?!
It's one of the more dominant programs in America, in any sport. They've won 18 of the last 20 national titles. Last year without a loss. Many seasons they look to their annual home-and-home with a Canadian school to find real competition. And, it's basically a club sport, presumably largely alumni funded.
And, poking around the web a bit, it seems like noone else understand what's happening to Cal Rugby, either. Even Cal. The team turns a profit each year, sending ~$300k back into the general athletic department funds. The team will continue, as part of a new category, "Varsity Club" or some such.
Maybe the university is trying to kick them out of, or make them pay separately for, weight rooms, training facilities, sports medicine, etc? Really not clear what's going on.

My guess...Title ix, but that is completely a guess.

I've not checked back since the 5th, but Title IX was certainly part of the speculation at Cal at the time.
The rugby coach had suggest that, if this really was the concern, that they'd be very happy to start a women's rugby side, funded by the men's team. Probably would be a very competitive side.
Lack of NCAA recognition was surely a factor. And lack of PAC10 play, no competition with traditional rivals like Stanford, etc, etc.
But a real shame to try to limit such a successful program.
