This is a scary game. Ball State beat DePaul and lost to St. Johns by 5, both on the road. Sagarin has them ranked 86th to our 102 thus making us about a 5 point underdog.
We need this win to set the table for the conference.
Speaking of the conference, I'll be "in the house" for the Cleveland State game!! Hope to say hello to several of my friends from this forum.

BSU is a pretty good midmajor team. This should be a great springboard into the conference play. VU and HL match up pretty well with the MAC...other than VU's loss to Toledo. BSU has quite a bit of local flavor with Jones, Berry, and Davis. On paper, the teams appear similar with guard centric lineups with solid center play. I have stated my feelings for Jones before, he would have been a nice VU center. Did VU ever recruit Davis out of Plymouth? I dont recall hearing his name. lowposter

Pomeroy puts them at 114 to Valpo's 130. But gives Valpo a three point edge since it's a home game. www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2010/12/breaking_down_mac_mens_basketb.htmlbreaks down the MAC and calls Ball State the most solid team. No slouches, for sure. Should be a good game. One that, I think, we'll win with solid play. bsufans.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB_14&file=index&action=viewtopic&topic=22295&8is one recent thread from their message board. There's another earlier one about our Toledo loss. One of the Ball State fans says "We have a distinct advantage in the back court, but I think they have a distinct advantage in the front court. They play much better when playing at a frenetic pace." Another, after watching us play Purdue, said "They have some real nice guards, but I came away really impressed with their forwards. They got 3 or 4 of them that they rotate. They aren't really big per se but they are physical. They did not back down from Purdue. They were scrappin it up the whole game. J.Jones could have a very rough time in the paint. If "we" don't box out, Valpo will absolutely kill us on the boards. There best play, Wood scored 20 tonight. He's legit, but I think we have some guys that will be able to play with him."

This will be a tough, tough game. Especially with Butler coming up next....we look past this one and we lose....have to keep focus.

Here's the question for tonight, fellas: Is the third-best team in the Horizon League, playing at home, better than the third-best team in the MAC? Win, and this will very likely be the best-ever non-conference performance by the H League in its 31 years of existence.

If we wear gray, it's gloom and doom. Book it!

I have an extra ticket to tonight's game if anyone is interested -- free. It is in the upper deck, section DD, row J (I think).

There are several interesting sidenotes to this game. Not only was Jarrod Jones a Valpo recruit but also Tyrae Robinson from Bowman. Then there is Chris Bond from Bowman who some thought we should recruit but apparently didn't.
We match up pretty well with these guys. It should be quite a game. Don't think there will be any "looking past" Ball State. If anything there will be some "let's get even" thinking after losing last year at their place.

I think it would normally be tough not to overlook Ball State with the Butler game coming up, but having played them last year really helps.

Just because these guys didn't come to Valpo doesn't mean we didn't recruit them. I've already mentioned what I was told about Jones and his academics, not sure about the others, but I also don't know that we DIDN'T recruit them. We might well have and they decided to go somewhere else.....

I saw a few oddsmaker sites showing VU as a 7 point favorite tonight. I could be way off but I just don't see us winning this game by that wide a margin. I'm almost leaning towards a BSU win given how we can't seem to definitively close out games yet.
Butler beat BSU by 23 at home earlier this year so it will be interesting to see how we play and match up given that Butler will be next.

Not-explicitly-gambling sites (some computerized, some maybe not) have Valpo by 3, 6, 8.
