What ever happened to school spirit? When I was in college (not VU) I attended EVERY football & basketball game, regardless of the opponent or our record. We had to stand in line, the day before, to get football tickets, they were is such demand.
I've read a lot of reasons (excuses) why more students don't attend VU games, and I say most are lame. The real reason is that most students just aren't fans, and that is a shame. Does anyone believe that most of them are studying on a weekend game night? I don't. I happen to be a fan. I have had season tickets for over 30 years. I pay a fair amount of money to attend games, and I attend every home game, and even some away games, just because I am a fan. And remember I didn't go to VU. I can understand why students wouldn't go to football games, but there are several sports where VU teams are successful & competitive (BB & VB to name just two).

Did you even read my post above Dick? I think the jury is still out on this year's level of student support, but I was pleased with the turnout last night. Yes, I read it. My point is that an organized student section is more effective. I'm glad that there were 250-300 students at the game....it just would have seemed that way if they all were in the student section and there was some organization to it, as there used to be. I am a Purdue alum as everyone knows, and the "Paint Crew" is credited with being one of the best college student crowds in the country and tough for opponents to play against. I think the VUCRU used to be the same and I'm sorry it isn't anylonger. By the way, students pay $5 extra to sit in the Paint Crew Section at Purdue. Interesting concept....

Interesting concept.... a) Purdue has 30,836 undergrads. "Nearly 3,000" turned out for Paint Crew signups. Valpo has ~2,900 undergrads. Getting 250-300 students at a game would be about the exact same ratio, if not better. b) You're arguing that Valpo's student section isn't organized enough in one sentence, and then at the end of your post advocating for charging a cost to join it? That would dilute any organization at this point even further... Look, I'd love more students at all the games and for them all to cheer for 40 straight minutes and bring as much energy as they did against Purdue as much as anybody. That's just not realistic (for a myriad of reasons), and to judge the students based on the only other D-I game while they're on campus seems way too quick...

Ah...I'm not advocating charging to join the student section, I was simply pointing out that you have to pay to be in the Paint Crew at Purdue. I just found that interesting, just like I said...and I don't think anyone is "judging" the students after one game. Thing have changed over several years and some of us "oldtimers" liked it better before. I'm just trying to understand what happened...

I explained what happened. It has been 6+ years since we played in the NCAA tournament and we haven't had a marquee win in 12 years. And, as I stated before, it's too early to judge the level of student support this year anyway. Let's relax and see what the balance of the year brings before we determine whether or not this year's changes have been good or bad.

2 nonconfence games against non d1s, 2 blowouts against non d1s, the purdue game, a game the saturday after finals week, a game during winter break, and the y. st. game. That was the ONLY NORMAL GAME so far. The only home game during regular classes that was against a relatively similarly matched opponent. Take a chill pill, and if Valpo keeps playing decently well, the students will show up. I am skipping a fraternity recruitment event to go. I care. Some students care. Some don't. It is what it is. They should care, but I think the onus of Friday night looking bad attendance-wise was the townies not showing up.

Hey Dick:
Saw your post about my Son Ryan how he wanted the team built around him. That is farthest from the truth! He wanted to be part of the team! Had a great career at Purdue Cal and SIUE. Scored 45 of 92 his last game. 7 guys on your broncho league team got division one scholarships and you didn't win the championship. Get you facts right!!!!

Student section looked thin tonight? Strangely, it looked like they were sitting in columns?

Anyway, I'm glad he had a great career and obviously he found a place that was better for him then here. Hope you and he are happy....I didn't realize that about my baseball guys, except you at Butler, but that's very cool. I loved that team and talk about them often.

Hopefully, after the win against Cl. St., and a return to normalcy on campus, as well as continued Horizon League play, we get some raucous crowds out for the next few home weekends. I think we should, and if we don't, I will consider this topic a valid concern. I know I will be getting all the people I can to turn out, and loudly, for the next home games in two weeks.

I will be there on the 21st for the Milwaukee game. I'm skeptical about my ability to stick around for the Green Bay game on the 23rd because I have to get back to St. Louis for something, but I may push my luck anyway the way things are going. I will be in the house again for the Butler game on the 29th.

I will definitely be at the Butler game, possibly sporting a 4 month old (depending on how my wife's work schedule looks) . . . could be interesting.
