Tell Valpo how you feel about mascot...please read When I wrote the Athletic Department they told me the following person was responsible for the mascot and branding initiative. scott.ochander@valpo.edu I wrote to Scott and gave him my thoughts on the mascot and how other universities and firms have shown how they listen to their stakeholders. I also encouraged him to make a quick decision to remove the mascot before homecoming. My note went unanswered. Please write Scott and tell him how you feel about this. VU has to learn how to listen to their students and alums. This is a great opportunity for this "learning experience". Go Valpo!

This has been discussed in the mascot thread. They held an open session for students about issues with the mascot and the new marketing campaign. I attended this session and I can assure you the mascot will be altered (the head) by next year. Time and money issues prevent them from making a change this year.

I'm willing to wait to see how the mascot changes in the facial/helmet features and the difference if any that makes in the perception of the mascot. I can see if the correct changes are made that the mascot will look 75% better and much more acceptable. Let's hope for the best right now.

My experience has always been positive when writing to Valpo officials, be it the President or anyone else. I have always gotten a response and expect you will also. If not, I'd write again, to a higher authority. Valpo has always been about its people and they have always cared about alumni and other stakeholders in a special way.

I went to Valpo (as did several in my family) and do not completely agree with you on how they listen and care about their stakeholders.

I wrote to Scott Ochander as well and never got a response back. I agree with vu72 that normally Valpo cares about what alumni and others have to say. Ochander is new to the university, so maybe he doesn't share those same values.

So don't let him off the hook, Write to President Heckler and explain what you did and the fact you received no response. My guess is that he will sespond to you and perhaps, get the wood out that ignoring thoughtful alums is not the way to proceed.

I'm probably the only person on this board who thinks the mascot is pretty good, although since I live here in Iowa I've not seen it in person, unlike others on this board. I think the idea to embrace our brown and gold colors was a good one. The VU shield is pretty neat. I just think the marketing guys did a pretty good job overall. Paul

I challenge you to find something less important to become this obsessed about. How many posts have you made today in succession on this topic? Overall, I like the new branding and I respect IMC for not reacting in a knee jerk way to a few who responded negatively right off the bat. They have said changes are coming next year. Let's see what happens and address the issue again at that time if it hasn't been corrected to your liking. For the record, the general public is quite fond of the new mascot judging by the impressive amount of photo and appearance requests it gets. It made an appearance at a local elementary school two weeks ago and was a huge hit.

That said, I am on a sports b-board so its importance is all relative compared to other world problems and issues. I would tier all issues on this board reletively 'minor' - but branding may be the most important. If the general public is so fond of the mascot they have been doing a great job of hiding that fact. Appearing at a elementary school and giving the kids a break from class would not be my ideal focus group to evaluate the mascot - not the right demographics.

I am also obsessed with the fact the football field is too far away from the stands ever since the field turf was put in. Can you push this one for me?

The distance between the stands and the field has a lot to do with the track that was supposed to be installed in that area. They left space for the track, but it hasn't been built yet.

Agree the mascot is lame, but if the head is replaced I can live with it. The current dime store balloon version should have been dropped fast. Anyway, I wonder if the distance from bleachers to football field just seems bigger due to two things. We had a great view of the field from being much closer than most college grandstands before. Also, maybe the grandstand seats are higher in front and also rise more quickly at other field? It does feel odd to look across a green field to see the turf.
