ND has recently announced that DOD Sec. Gates will give the commencement address at this year's graduation. Nice. For Valpo, maybe '72 could help us line up Congresswoman M.Bachmann for the commencement address. She may not know much about history, but she is a national figure,a potential presidential candidate, from nearby MN.and also a member of the MSLC. Wow! Let's go for it.

I actually have met her and she is impressive! I was thinking you local congressman from Hilton Head would be a solid choice. I know you must know him and be very fond of his approach. Right??

bill kurtis a couple years ago was pretty cool, but i wish the university could bring in a high-value name as a speaker.

My vote though goes for Steve Wilkos, who may be getting an honorary degree from VU a la Tommy Lasorda.

Man! First Nick Martin and now Robert Gates. G.D. Notre Dame! Curse the Edict of Worms! Valpo needs Hromadka to pull us out of this nosedive!

This message board, for the most part, holds to a very reasonable standard of decorum - and, good or bad, is often relatively serious. Especially if you consider it's an internet message board! But, the particular eccentricities that we do have boggle me.
(Not speaking of your brother-in-law, fw, but some of the other odd threads in this post and others.)

It sure beats when rick used to come along on a daily basis with 20-25 posts of really conservative news articles that were so one-sided that most of us couldn't read them because they weren't so much opinions as they were edicts to obey what I say, as some people feel Obama is doing these days.
In terms of commencement speakers, I know in Spring 2004, we had Jackie Lydon(?) from NPR, and honestly, I can't remember a thing that she talked about. I suppose I might have remembered, if I listened to NPR at the time. I think it would be good to have a commencement speaker who is a VU grad that would come in and talk about the realities of what graduating meant in terms of the real world, and what they walked into upon leaving VU. I guess I get tired of all the "let's have so-and-so celebrity" come in and talk about their success or inspiration. Have a real graduate of the university who is successful, but doesn't have the job title of "Creator of company/CEO", but might just have a job they never thought they'd get, and maybe how they've been able to be so successful working in a field they didn't major in, or expect to be as rewarding for them. The reward doesn't have to be that they've made millions of dollars or won big awards, but more that they've been happy in their job, kept their finances in order, paid their bills, had a family, kept food on the table and a roof over their head, and taken pride in what VU meant for them. Help the new graduates see that their are rewards out there that maybe we don't find right away, or always see on television or in the major newspaper and magazines.

Actually as commencement speakers' messages go, Jacki's was one of the better ones I've been at anywhere. So was Stephen Furbacher's a few Decembers ago. Both had real messages for graduates, especially of VU, and were not too "sermony" or "all about how wonderful I am". You could have a whole thread on what makes a great commencement speech, short answer -- brevity. On the other hand, my son's graduation in '09 at a bigger name school had the "big name" speaker -- VP Joe Biden -- and other than the first 5 minutes honoring the at the time recently passed away Tim Russert (who was supposed to be the speaker and was an terrific sports fan), the other 35+ minutes were unbearable (not surprisingly from Biden) with the exception of one good Bidenism. But the free Krispy Kreme donuts while waiting in the security line were a bonus.
