Campus closed for 1.5 days due to incoming weather. When was the last time anything like this happened at VU?

But, to close for 1.5 days? Preemptively? Remarkable!

The university probably succumbed to the nationwide hysteria. It is pretty unprecedented to close preemtively....at least recently! All I know is that I could not be happier to be in southern Mississippi right now!

I know when we had a snow day in 2007 (I think?) it was the first one at Valpo since 1987.

I know when we had a snow day in 2007 (I think?) it was the first one at Valpo since 1987. you are correct. that was the valentine's day 'storm' in 07. 6 inches fell the night prior and somehow classes were cancelled in a blanket announcement. that didn't even happen for the lake effect monster that dropped 27 inches in 09.

according to the weather service, valpo's in the 8-10 inch range. but they're also awaiting some more daytime snow (forecasts are 3-7 inches).

It's been snowing quite a bit, but I don't think the university needed to close today. Just in my three years here, it seems like we've been forced to attend classes in worse conditions than this, like the "lake effect monster" referred to by vuweathernerd.

Doppler radar is now a student's best friend. If impending doom is predicted, school officials freak out because they know parents will freak out. Everyone announced yesterday between 4-6 p.m. that schools in Lake and Porter County would be out today due to the extreme cold. Well, it's cold, but we're not getting the wind that was predicted so I don't think it's minus-40 out there.
It's nice for the kids to be able to sleep in when the superintendent calls off school the night before. But I think they missed on this one because the weather predictions didn't hold true today regarding temps.
