Watch this video of highlights from the UIC/Butler game. Matt Howard took an inadvertant elbow to the head just before Shawn Vanzant hit a three to end the first half. His face is really "bloody" awful. www.fox59.com/videobeta/?watchId=325ccb44-5dbb-4ad9-8cd6-281510892b60 It goes by quickly. Watch the slowed down replay of Mack inbounding the ball and see Howard get nailed in the head by the elbow in the lane. Howard had stitches and is said to be a game time decision for the next game. He did not play the 2nd half.

That was a hard elbow. Howard might be a "bleeder", but that looked like a possible concussion to me. From what we could see he kind of crumpled when the hit took place. Looked more like MMA then basketball.

I really respect Howard. What a warrior, a kid that has made the most out of his abilities and just keeps getting better. I would never question this kid's effort or heart. He is a coaches dream because you know what you are going to get when you put him out on the floor. Godspeed for a quick recovery.

Dittos from me. He personifies Butler's recent teams in a lot ways. Methodical, persistent, successful.

Matt Howard is a hard working player who plays 100% every possession and game. He is a warrior, and "old school" sort of player IMHO. Reminds me a bit of Dan Oppland at Valpo. A real gym rat who it seems is always working to improve his game. I really hope Matt Howard will be ok. He is one player who it will be nice not having to play against next year and beyond.

Two things (after a brief word that I have always liked Howard, he is the epitome of old school Y player, all he needs are the goggles when he is done playing overseas; he does all the little things and uses every advantage, the chicken wing, the hip shove, etc.).
1. Watch closely before the elbow, a classic Howard push off move to release before the screen to free him.
2. Howard gets away with more moving picks than anyone in the conference. Just a few possessions before that play, he was literally a pulling guard. To contrast this, what is most frustrating is the number of calls Valpo gets for alleged illegal screens especially out top when our guys are stationary more than any other team's high screens we have seen this year. Something to watch game to game in conference play.

I've lost track, are we rooting for Butler to win or lose this game? Lose, I think, right?
Get well soon, Matt! (Wait, except we want Butler to lose to Detroit?)

This will be interesting to see how Butler hold together without Matt. It will in some regards, give us a peek at Butler next year. I know people respect Matt's game but I really don't think Butler fans (given their affection for the new and coming guys) realized just how much of a loss it will be when he is gone. Kind of like Hayward. Everyone thought they'd be really good, and they still are, just not national championship material. Now that Matt has developed his 3 point shot, I can see him playing in the NBA. Think Brian Cardinal from Purdue, except Matt has the ouitside shot.
