Re: values.com Reply -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I agree with all you said, OT (except the "Hamlet moment" line - the coach called the time out to set up their inbound play, not to have a Hamlet moment, but the kid told the coach that the ball was tipped out off him). But this isn't a coaches training film. It's about having character. The basketball example may be a little goofy. But it's really about a young man doing the right thing, even to his own detriment, and his coach demonstrating character to the rest of the team by acknowledging the kid and telling him, "Good call." I agree, this almost certainly wouldn't happen in real life. I always look at a ref missing an out of bounds call in our favor as a break! Back in the days when Valpo was in the conference there was a story floating around that Homer Drew had done this very thing - admonished an official to reverse his call after the ball had last touched a Valpo player but Valpo was awarded the ball out of bounds. I always wondered if that ever really happened or if it was a story fabricated to further Homer's squeaky-clean reputation. In this instance, it's about showing character when it costs you - that's all. That's why I like it. That's a value that's increasingly rare in our world. I certainly don't recall, but I never attended a game at ORU. Maybe the chef could enlighten us. Homer does his share of going after officials, we all know that. I could see him doing something like that if it wasn't a close game - but most of the Valpo-ORU games were tight.

I was at every game we played at ORU and don't recall this happening. I think it's a story that just shows the respect Homer has among fans and his peers.

I can see going out on a limb and saying that if this absolutely *did* happen somewhere, Homer is one of those coaches who plausibly would have done it, but I think Homer is too competitive (nothing wrong with that) to do it.
I'm fairly certain that there's no way *I* would do it if I were in his shoes, unless -- as someone mentioned -- my team was up by 50 or something. Frankly, I'm not sure it would even occur to me, so wrapped up in trying to win the game would I be.
(wow, I need an English Teacher's ruling on that last sentence. It sounded much better in my head).

I do recall the time that Xavier came to town with those two big 6'10" studs (Derek Strong and the other name escapes me) and X just drummed us. Probably Homer's first season. Homer took the microphone as the game was just about over and congradulated the X coach (Pete Gillian?) on building a great program. He apologized to the VU fans and promised them that he would build the program into a winner. Not sure if we are quite on the level as X, but the program is a winner and something to be proud of. lowposter
