President Mark A. Heckler will personally share his update on current and future plans for Valparaiso University during his presentation of “Our Common Pursuit: Valpo’s Call to Lead and Serve for the Next Generation.” The presentation will highlight the strategic plan for Valparaiso University and will take place at various locations throughout the country. The strategic plan serves as the University’s road map for the next two decades and will chart the course for future success at the institution. This is your opportunity to take an in-depth look at the plan, and to interact with the president, fellow alumni, and friends of Valpo. LINK: www.valpo.edu/alumni/events/sp.php_______________________________ Anyone plan on going to this? They are taking place in Chicago, Valpo, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St Louis, and Detroit (why no Indianapolis?).

Hey, why not Cleveland?
We've already got a LeBron complex and this won't help with Valpo alumni.

Yeah, Ohio seems to be missing. They may be adding more locations possibly (originally just Valpo, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis were listed).

My wife and I will be at the Minneapolis gathering. Interestingly enough, if you look at "who will be attending" stats, at the moment, Minneapolis has more people going than any other site. We had a great turnout for the 150th gathering as well.

If I was still in North Dakota, I would be attending the Minneapolis one as well. I think it's great that President Heckler is taking the time and money to do this. 72, please let us know of any good information that comes out of this! The strategic plan is supposed to be unveiled to the public later this year.

Haha, I am down south for a few months on some Air Force training. I'll be back to North Dakota this summer for good. Hoping to catch a Twins game this summer in Minneapolis though! Just curious, but does anyone know if this is a pretty big deal for the President to be traveling and hosting presentations like this? Did Harre or others before him do things like this? And is this seen as significant in reaching out to alumni and just in general? As a young alumni, it means a lot to me, and if I was close to one of these conferences I would definitely like to have gone.

I would say that any time the President comes to town it is a pretty big deal, and we are certainly looking forward to hearing what he has to say. As for Alan Harre, yes, he did the same sort of thing and remember him making a similar presentation in Minneapolis about 10 years ago to coincide with the launch of a capital campaign. Presidents travel all the time and engage alumni, primarily for fund raising purposes. Alan did host a smaller gathering of some of us alums once or twice, having about 20 people to a dinner gathering.

I am dissapointed that he would not come to Fort Wayne. I know we are not the largest of cities but this city was the birthplace of the university. Lots of alumni will be dissapointed.

Kind of like the "wedding crashers"? Cleveland rocks!......some good Valpo history there too. Guess Detroit has moved ahead of us.

The amount of travel can't be unusual for a university president. Having a set of "public" meetings like this may be new. I don't recall any since 2000, and from what vu72 said perhaps Harre preferred smaller gatherings.
Sounds like a good move, to me!
I was a little surprised not to have previously heard of this (e.g. by a targeted email). But, perhaps it's reasonable for them to assume that interested parties would actually open their "Alumni E-Newsletter" (which I, admittedly, tend not to do).

Either that, or the targeted cities hosting this tour sent e-mails to the alums in their portion of the Alumni Association? I guess I'd find it unnecessary to saturate my e-mail will Strategic Plan Tour info for a meeting I wouldn't be able to attend because I don't live close enough to where the meeting will be.

Yeah, fair point. Targeted emails + the newsletter do seem reasonable.

No shortage of correspondence from what I've seen. A snail-mail postcard a couple weeks ago, a phone call about it from someone at VU, an email about it directly addressed to me. It'd be impossible for me not to know Heckler is coming to Milwaukee.
Too bad it's on the opening night of the NCAA tournament and I'll be out of town with friends enjoying the gloriousness of March Madness.
