It comes down to how bad the guys want to win. I'm afraid that if our 3 point shot doesn't show up, then we'll have trouble in the lane with Holman. And then we start to panic. And then it's game over.
I think the game goes down to the wire but we come out on top.

We have beaten these guys twice and aren't going to be intimidated. We can handle the preasure. Look for a 7-10 point win.

I don't think Johnson has been playing that well in the past 6 games. Against Wright St he looked off. Valpo would've probably beat GB if Johnson played better. Against YS he looked lost defensively and missed key rebounds and committed a really bad foul on a 3-point play. He picked it up late and had a nice rebound and a couple of points. It's great that Kevin has played intense and aggressive down the stretch. In order to beat Detroit we need Johnson to play hard and stay out of foul trouble. He seems to give in easier when he's at 3,4 fouls. Van Vijk won't be able to play a lot this game. He's just too banged up. It's disappointing that Van Vijk showed more effort than Johnson last game despite his condition.
Valpo isn't a big team. They rely on good ball movement to set up an open shot. Like last time we played Detroit, Valpo will rely on outside shots. We took 26 3-pointers against Detroit. Only shot .300 for the game (.381 if you take away Johnsons ridiculous 5 3-pt tries), while Detroit impressively went 6-14. Wood went 4-10 but took a couple run-down-the-court-and-fire 3's we've seen him take recently. Offensively we have to be smarter than what we've been. No quick low percentage 3's. Johnson and Buggs should not attempt a 3-pointer regardless of how open they are. We also can't be afraid to move the ball around Holman. They're going to guard the perimeter and rely on Holman to block shots. He's going to get blocks, but we can't get away from our effective offensive style. We were able to get Holman to commit last game and still get easy layups down low.
I'll be at the game. Wondering how empty the place will be. Probably like a typical UWM game. BAM.

Detroit wins. I just don't have any faith in their ability to win games that count in light of thier finish in conference.

I'm with you, Milan. It's tough to beat a team three times, and even though we did it with Youngstown, I think our luck is about to run out.

nice opening post and breakdown, a3uge.
I think picking a score before the game is kind of pointless. We all know that if Valpo shows up, they can and will win, big. However, they may have a Loyola-esque breakdown and lose by twenty. They are also capable of pulling out squeakers (several times), or losing close ones (Wisconsin road trip).
Thus, I am not going to predict anything, but only hope that the Valpo team we came to appreciate earlier this season comes out ready to play tomorrow night.

With Detroit's size, there's absolutely no way we can take this team down without crashing the defensive glass more intensely than we have the past four games. YSU ate our lunch on their offensive end. Yes, there were a few times they came over the back with no call, however, there was one time in particular I watched Johnson literally watch a defensive rebound opportunity fizzle as a YSU player aggressively came in from the 3-pt arc to grab it. We're simply not aggressive enough going up (in position) for defensive rebounds (AND, for that matter, not aggresively going up with authority in the paint on offense). If we let Detroit outscrap us, it'll take a lights out night from behind the arc, and we all know how that's been going the last four games. Poised transition game, agressiveness on the defensive glass, we win. Not, we lose.

Poised transition game, agressiveness on the defensive glass, we win. Not, we lose. I really agree with this analysis and I remember that rebound vividly. It was unacceptable and inexcusable. The other play was the three point play when YSU got about three offensive boards in a row and Johnson casually picked up his fourth foul on an easy basket. Kevin did a great job digging out a rebound and running to keep it in late in the game. He looked like he was in serious pain after that. We need this kind of determination from Johnson.

I think it will boil down to early foul numbers for Cory Johnson. It always makes a big impact. Against a big team like Detroit it is an even bigger factor.
If he keeps fouls low he can play loose and aggressive.

Our mental game flew out a bus window somewhere between Green Bay and Valparaiso. Thank goodness for some early 3s, or we'd be in an even bigger hole.

Fortunate to be up 4 at half. Thanks to DET for some equalizing turnovers; we seem to have found some touch from 3-point land. That's encouraging.

Man... Holman is big!... and Minnerath too. Good thing we have Van Wijk chewing up minutes.
If we can get in the half court, we'll do OK. Cory needs to pass up the open 3 and stay near the hoop.
I forgot how good Adam Amin is. I thought he was a pro when I heard him work as a student.
