I don't especially like that kind of play either, but it is what Cleveland State has been since the arrival of Waters as their coach, and it is what happens at the top level conferences...i.e. Big Ten, ACC, etc. When we were winning the mid-Con every year, that's how the rest of the league referred to us, so maybe there's something to it. I just know when we were going through that 10 years stretch, we were always big and physical inside....

Actually, I'm not entirely certain I should feel the way I do, because I'm not sure where to draw the line between "physical" play and "brutish" play. The distinction may not be significant, though I'm not prepared to concede that point just yet. Maybe the only difference is in the rhetoric about it, not the actual on-court implementation of it. One thing I am sure about: if there is a problem here, it's with the officials, who should refuse to be worn down by such tactics. A foul is a foul is a foul is a foul. I don't care what the clock says, I don't care how many you've already called, I don't care about anything else. If it's a foul, call it, regardless of the context. 2 Techs, and the coach is gone. You have the upper hand, Mr. Official. Use it!!! |
