I ran across some interesting information on the Valpo Law homepage about the reconstruction and expansion of Heritage Hall. It will soon be known as the Heritage Hall Lawyering Skills Center. They have the floorplans and elevations available for public viewing. I hope it comesw to fruition relatively soon! It says that the project has been approved for construction drawings. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it's interesting nonetheless. I'm excited that the Law school has taken such an interest in preserving this VU landmark. www.valpo.edu/law/heritagehall/index.php

The former mail center attached for Heritage Hall is slated for demolition in the next week or two, supposedly. This should make room for the addition relatively soon I hope!

This project is still moving along. Last I checked a couple days ago, the addition still hasn't been destroyed yet. However, there are markings all over the pavement and cones around a parking lot, so stay tuned for more info!

www.post-trib.com/news/porter/1742850,vuhall0830.article What I didn't realize is that they are actually tearing down ALL of Heritage Hall, not just the addition. They are, however, erecting a replacement very similar to the one now, and some of the current bricks will be used in the construction.

Sad to say goodbye to the oldest building on campus, but it sounds like it was in bad shape.
Now the Hilltop Gym (1939) will hold the distinction!

I did not know you were allowed to tear buildings on the registry down??? I am really surprised some people aren't really screaming their heads off about this.

I am surprised too. I'm glad we're getting a new building, but the university has basically destroyed all forms of architectural history to this campus. There will no longer be an "old campus" after this.

I did not know you were allowed to tear buildings on the registry down??? I am really surprised some people aren't really screaming their heads off about this. From the Post Tribune story 8/30/09: On Thursday, the city's Board of Works and Safety granted a permit to demolish Heritage Hall, and waived the 60-day waiting period for historical buildings. Built in 1875 as a three-story boarding house, Heritage is home to the law school's public legal clinic. And much of the original building, which survived a fire that destroyed the third floor in 1879, has extensive damage or structural problems. From Wikipedia: Heritage Hall is the oldest building on the campus of Valparaiso University in the U.S. state of Indiana. Erected in 1875, the building was originally named Flint Hall after the contractor that built it, but was renamed after Richard Aaron Heritage, head of the music department from 1878-1894. Within the decade the top floor was destroyed in a fire, after which Heritage bought the building, put a roof on the remaining two stories, and renamed it after himself. At different times throughout its history, Heritage Hall underwent numerous renovations and was used as a dormitory, barracks during World War I, a machinery classroom, and finally a library when Valparaiso University was bought by the Lutheran University Association in 1925. In 1959, the new Moellering Library had been completed and the building was converted to classrooms and offices. Heritage Hall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. From the history of libraries at Valparaiso University: Initially, Valparaiso University’s library was located in the old college building, which burnt down in 1923. After the fire, the library was moved into East Hall. East Hall functioned as the library for approximately two and a half years. When the university was bought by the Lutheran University Association, East Hall was torn down and the library was relocated to Heritage Hall late in 1925. Since Heritage Hall had been used as a training center during World War I, much effort was put into making the building usable. Although there had been plans for the construction of a new library when it became evident that Heritage was too small, the combination of World War II and the Great Depression prevented the university from having the funds to undergo such a project. Also, when the old gym was destroyed by a fire, the construction of a new gym took precedence over the construction of a new library. In 1957 the chapel also succumbed to a fire. Since Heritage Hall was next to the chapel, it was feared that wind would cause the fire to spread to Heritage Hall. Thus, students and faculty members climbed on the roof of the building and threw off the hot coals that landed on the roof. Although the fire did not actually spread to the library, students and teachers took preventative measures and attempted to rescue and move as many books as possible. Unfortunately since a number of books were dropped in the snow during this process, their efforts may have been more detrimental than helpful. Two years later, however, the dream of a new library was actualized with the construction of Moellering Library.
