Do we recruit many Juco players? I ask because I've been following Grand Rapids Community College and their football success this year. Now ranked #10 in the nation, this 1st year college coach led the team to 9-0 after winning multiple state high school championships. Many of these players are looking to transfer to a 4 year institution to continue their football careers. Do these Juco players lose a year of eligibility from the transfer, or can they play right away?

They can play right away. David Macchi (02-03 QB) was probably the most notable JuCo transfer we had.
It looks like we had two JuCos on this year's team: Goergen and Evanko.

I think the rules are the same for basketball. BWOOD transferred in from Highland CC and obviously can play right away.
My guess is that as long as you change levels (D1 to D2 or D3) (JC to D1) or, less likely D2 to D1, I think you can play right away. It is the D1 to D1 situation where you must sit out a year.
It may be the same at D2 but I doubt it is at D3 which is non-scholarship.

Thank you for the information. I have more questions!
It seems a coaching change would negatively affect recruiting. Isn't this the time, with high school football playoffs, to be scouting/visiting kids? If we don't have a head coach, who does this??
I've also been following Grand Valley State University, who has won multiple D2 championships, and they seem to get a lot of players who end up not starting for MSU, U of M, etc. Do we ever get those kinds of players?

Yes, a coaching change would adversely affect recruiting, but it would not be catastrophic for the 2010 class. In a situation like this, someone in the athletic department will maintain contact with the recruits already in the pipeline. At this level, most prospects won't make a decision until near National Letter of Intent Day in February...that's when they'll know all their options. Some wait even later to commit. There is plenty of time for a new coach to wrap up a decent class, even if he doesn't come on board until Jan 1.

I was bored tonight, and decided to see how many Michigan guys are on the team:
16 players from Michigan. 7 are on the depth chart. 2 freshman, 4 sophmores, 1 junior.
I can't think of any FCS schools in Michigan.
