I think we understand that the new crusader is...unpopular to say the least among the folks who use this forum. How about this: How would you change the Crusader to make it look better? Just curious.

I have to say the new mascot is good for one thing...every time I am having a long day, I just come back here, look at it, and laugh!

Give "IT" a shield. Hell, the football team needs to defend itself.

Mascot costumes are supposed to be "cartoony" and fun... not some PC'd Halloween costume. The release stated that now everyone could identify with it, since its no longer a male... My question is... Who would want to? I think more people could "identify" with the old one because it was an actual character, not some person dressed up (poorly) as a Crusader.

I'm probably weird in this regard, but I just am having a hard time getting worked up about the mascot one way or the other. I might be the only person who doesn't go to a basketball game to look at the mascot. Just sayin'

sorry, but he/she/"Pat" is terrible....just terrible. not a big fan of the new logos either...your old cartoon crusader, imo, was one of the best in the league....the new one on the HL site is awful. The mascot is very bad. I can live with some of the logos. This one and the similar ones are ok . The lifelines are just plain stupid. The website... come on now... we are not a photo sharing site we are a university. I like the Valpo Snapshots but it should not be at the top of the page, put it somewhere else so people don't get confused. Not particularly impressed with whomever put this whole branding thing together.

It seems like everyone on here is upset with the mascot, but were you at the game to see the reaction the community had?
The mascot was in literally hundreds of pictures and the kids all embraced it! When the game was over there were a ton of people saying how much they enjoyed the new mascot.
Just give it a chance, and I believe you will find it to be a positive change in the future.

Just curious. give it a buff muscular body, a face, and a shield with a cross on it an then we would have something to be proud of. Mascots, Icons, Avatars are all about visual representation. Anytime you have to explain what a mascot stands for or what its characteristics are, you have failed in presenting the "image" you want to portray. Lets face it, universities are all about competition. Competition on the athletic fields and competition for right students that fit your university profile. In my opinion making a sterilized PC compliant mascot does nothing to help us do either of those two things.

I personally love the new mascot. I respect what the old one has done for us, but I think the new one gives us a spark and it is really popular amongst youth! The kids were so excited at the game to see him.

I haven't seen the new IT in person, but based on the pictures it looks pretty lame. My sense is that the costume was designed to be a low-cost alternative that sortof looked like a crusader. Unfortunately, it just looks amateurish, cheap, nondescript and boring. (I could come up with a few more adjectives as well, but you get the idea.) There are plenty of teams with spartan/knight mascots that would have been a good place to start; Michigan State and USC have reasonable mascots, why not Valpo?

Like all change I think it just takes time for it to grow on you. Being a student at the university I've heard the response and most of it is positive. I personally think the mascot is great and for he doesnt look anywhere near cheap to me! I took a picture with him and it looked like the real deal. If anything our old crusader, bless his heart was a bit cheaper.

I can resonate with the "facelessness" and difficulty to identify with the new crusader. PC wins again! But as far as attitude is concerned, the old Crusader was losing it. It wasn't due to any fault of his own, but the management of the mascot was not very good. Half of the home basketball games saw NO Crusader in attendance, and when he was there, his presence was hardly felt. The year before, Redrick Taylor did a fine job playing the part, but last year was lackluster at best. This year the Crusader is staffed by 3 paid students who auditioned for the part, and then recieved mascot training from some esteemed trainer of mascots. At least they will have an idea of what a mascot is supposed to do during games and will know how to get a crowd fired up! Also, the new crusader will have a more constant presence at a wider variety of sporting events and will show up to more than home the men's Butler Basketball game on ESPNU. So although the appearance of the new mascot may not initially impress, I am confident that his Character on the sidelines will. I tend to agree with deea2, just give IT( some time.

I've heard some mostly neutral and some negative reactions to the new crusader on campus talking to staff members and students. We all agree that the giant blowup Crusader that was at the football game was awesome -- if only the Crusader itself could have looked like that! I still think he's better than the old Crusader, but he just looks cheap and lacks personality.
