This would get hidden because its about Track, but Jarret Mickens, a senior long jumper, was named this week's HL Field Event Athlete of the Week for winning the Men's Long Jump at the Illinois State Redbird Open on Saturday. His winning jump was 22ft. 0 3/4". In most cases, I don't put a whole lot of salt into this meet because none of the teams field an entire team, due to distance runners resting after a long cross country season, and maybe only taking freshmen and non-scorers at top meets to see how fall camp has helped them going into January. Link: www.valpoathletics.com/news/default/173/10338/Also, a newcomer, Sarah Drozdowski, is the HL Women's Field Athlete of the Week. She became the second Valpo woman to break the 50ft. barrier in the women's weight throw. As a freshman, this excites me for the future of Ryan Moore's throwing corps in the program. I can't wait to see how she continues to grow in the throws. Link: www.valpoathletics.com/news/default/173/10339/It will be a long track season, but I can't wait to see what the teams do this year. They need to start doing some thing good to move out of the bottom spot of the HL. I know some of this will help with better indoor facilities, and the outdoor track that is still trying to get all of the necessary funds. Can't wait to read more about what happens with this program this season.

Claire Johnson, a freshman cross country runner from my church, also is suppose to run track. She didn't participate in this meet but more troubling, didn't get her picture taken with the track team. Her best time in the 800 would have finished second in the Horizon meet last year. Let's hope she decides to run track also.

The track team pictures are taken after the start of second semester, usually on MLK Day, unless that has changed in recent years. Just keep checking the results, she should show in the first meet after the new year.

Over the weekend, Mickens set the school record in triple jump. The record was 46 4, and he beat the record by almost 2 ft, checking in at 48 2.
