Note the tiny blurb on the new members (if you can find it). Good riddance Mid-Con.

Note the tiny blurb on the new members (if you can find it). Good riddance Mid-Con. "...and, welcome annual mediocrity!"

Hey backer....did you know that the Horizon League website lists Oral Roberts as having lost in the title game back in the '70's I think it was. When was Oral Roberts in the Horizon League (or its predecessor), and why did they leave? Also, what does it say that they invited us to join instead of asking you back?

ORU was an original member of the Midwestern Cities Conference (Butler, Loyola, Evansville, Detroit, ORU and Oklahoma City, as I recall). The thought back then was the name was picked in part to keep us out.
ORU dropped out of D1, perhaps out of sports entirely for a few years and that is when they dropped out. Without Oklahoma City, ORU makes no sense to the Horizon.

Also, what does it say that they invited us to join instead of asking you back? Could you ever imagine the Horizon League seriously considering Oral Roberts University - even for a second? Located in tim-buck-tulsa in the very heart of nowhere with a bb program in great risk of falling off the table as soon as a better program lures their coach away. Remember that over-rated ORU player that somehow won the Conference MVP in I believe 98-99? He was the best-of-the-worst among players that ORU used to recruit. When Sutton leaves, they'll be lucky if they can even recruit someone of his limited ability. As Mr. T would say, "I pity the fool that takes over the ORU basketball program when Scott Sutton leaves!"

Also, the HL doesn't have a predecessor, RLH. It simply changed its name in 2001 from Midwestern Collegiate Conference, that's all.

I am aware of that....however, since it lists Oral Roberts as a tourney runnerup and since most of the members were in the Mid-Con until 6 or 7 years ago...I'd say you are in error....the Horizon League is a name change to an almost totally different conference before the Mid-Con members entered...either that or they are taking the history of another conference as their own....

And, "mkesrt4driver", as you can see from the petty and off-point responses from the Valpo faithful, you're going to feel pretty LONELY in that regard on this forum. Good luck! (and, by the way, rlh: ORU is not the one trying to gloam onto anything Horizon-esque - the HL itself is the one that lists ORU's involvement from the early days. We were very proud to have been one of the founders of what became the HL back when Valpo was but a D-II also-ran, but the simple fact is that once Oklahoma City University went NAIA and ORU lost its traveling/scheduling partner, the writing was on the wall regarding our future with the conference...)

AND you got caught cheating....why does that always seem to be forgotten by the ORU faithful.....? YOU WANT THE TRUTH?!? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!! Here's what happened (I know because I WAS THERE). A disgruntled volunteer coach decided to extract his revenge on ORU by writing a letter to the NCAA, listing every single infraction he had ever seen during his time there, including a few he just plain made up. When the NCAA called back to basically say, "who is this guy and why is he bothering us?", ORU panicked (remember, this was in the days immediately following the SMU "death penalty") and decided to tuck tail by dropping out of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and moving down to NAIA. It was stupid, and they've paid for it ever since (in ways much worse than any NCAA probation would have ever punished them). No one associated with that decision is affiliated with the school anymore. But all us old timers still remember what happened. How is that "forgetting"? Can we help it that half of the ORU fans who comment on these boards are so young they don't even remember the Reagan administration?

I defer to your age....whatever, the story around the country is you got caught cheating...a lot of that had to do with Oral's statements that he wanted to win the National Championship...so people just naturally assumed that everything said about the program was true...whether it was or not, it is a memory that many of us still have...plus those younger than you and I have nothing else to refer too...but remember the old saying "where there's smoke, there's fire"....are you trying to tell me that none of it was true...I find that very hard to believe....

Note to eaglebackr: In case you forgot, this is a Valpo board and since you are not a Valpo fan, your comments about what Valpo fans post are out of line, and not welcome. Notice the theme here? Valpo, not oru. It's nice to be nice -try it.

Real minor stuff, though - free t-shirts to a couple of recruits, a ride across town to a booster club luncheon, stuff like that. The worst one was flying a player home for a family member's funeral (which, ironically, is allowed now due to a rule change). And, as everyone who's ever dealt with them knows, once the NCAA Infractions Committee comes a callin', they find whatever they want, in order to justify their existence. As for what you or others choose to believe, smoke vs. fire, etc. - we sleep pretty good at night... P.S. For the Norman Vincent Peale disciple: I'll be nicer when you get smarter.
