Since there isn't much going on here, I think we should give Rick a shot at coming back. I think that if we allow jj the freedom of (sorry Manny) just jj being jj. Rick should be allowed the same. If he wants to post all the off topic stuff in the world, he should be allowed to (providing it's in the off topic section). His opinion on basketball and other VU athletics, however, is just as important as any of ours.
So what do you say? Yes or no to Rick? Please discuss.
Plus, I know many of you, deep down, do kinda miss him (maybe rlh withstanding)!

I'm not sure Rick is around anymore. His son came to the games this past winter with another escort...Rick was no where to be found. I never did hear the story of his disappearance...maybe he's just mad at all of us. I personally feel bad about his demise, but he brought it on himself. Being the brunt of several of his personal attacks, I don't think there is any room for that sort of thing on this or anyother board. I realize that i am an old conservative, but that's my feeling. I confronted him personally about my feelings to no avail...so my vote is NO

I don't think I was part of the Rick-era. So I won't vote.

I think Rick is a good guy, but this board brought out the worst in him.

By saying 'not around anymore,' do you mean he passed?

My gut feeling is no, which I went with.
I had mixed feelings when he was banished, and I wasn't altogether sure it was necessary (I still think he should try hanging out on the Loyola board, he might find it friendlier over there, strangely enough).
If this place brought on the worst in Rick, I would also say that he brought out the worst in me and some of the rest of us. I wish it weren't so, I hate seeing people banned (for one thing, it only entrenches their attitudes). But I doubt it would work. I think it might be like IU with its zero tolerance policy and Bobby Knight, which didn't last very long. I never thought that had a chance of working either. Let's face it, Rick will never change (he even told me so once), and we'll always have him under a microscope, waiting for him -- perhaps even unconsciously hoping for him -- to slip up.
So I think it's probably best to let sleeping dogs lie. I do think we shouldn't feel better about ourselves at his expense, though.

By saying 'not around anymore,' do you mean he passed? Unless I missed it, no I don't think he's "passed". I still get the odd email from him every few months.

I'm adding my vote to the "no" column. It was unpleasant to say the least with Rick's diatribes going on all of the time and certainly caused brain damage in some. Look, for those of you new to the board, I think he had 500 posts in three months of some such unbelievable statistic.
I have met him and agree with valpo89 that Rick is a good guy. The problm was he is always on a soap box about somehing and it caused major disruptions, at the expense of some, with no upside.
I wish him well but agree that we should let sleeping dogs lie.

I am from the post-Rick era so I have no opinion of him one way or the other, but I guess I'm as bored as some of you so I pulled his last 10 posts. Those posts contained over 3,000 words of views on everything from family values to beastiality. Interestingly, there wasn't a single word on Valpo sports.

Rick is pretty much the only reason the "Off Topic" board was created. I'm surprised you didn't find anything on the Vagina Monologues.

When this came up before (after one of Rick's limited banishments), I made the mistake of voting yes to allow him back on. This was for the same sympathetic reasons many of you have described. However, that vote was a mistake, and it is clear that he should never be allowed to post here again.

I say let him back on. He usually had valid sports points and if we don't like some of his rants and tirades, then just don't read them. Ignore him. Great thing about America is that you can turn the channel if you don't like what's on.

Easy for you to say, you weren't the target of some of his viscious attacks...I was....under no circumstances should he be allowed on here again...PERIOD

Great thing about America is that you can turn the channel if you don't like what's on. Another great thing about America is that you have the right to choose who you invite into your home. And you have the right to ask folks that do come into your house to leave if they become disruptive. I wasn't here for this particular poster, so I won't vote or comment on his specific situation. But judging from the posts in this thread, I know his type well from my experiences at other boards/sites. One guy can take a robust message board community into the tank in a hurry, if allowed to go unchecked. "Freedom of speech" arguments ring hollow. This is a privately-run and privately-funded message board. Thus, unless you're the one paying the frieght, you play by the rules the mod has set. No one's stopping this Rick fellow from creating his own blog to spout off to his heart's content. He's not being stifled in any way.

I couldn't agree more, BigMo. But I wonder how people would feel, then, if I owned a business and put a sign outside stating I'll only serve a certain type of people, or I won't serve a certain type of person because I've had trouble with those types of people in the past (I'm not talking about the archaic racial ridiculousness of decades past, mind you. That's disgusting and inexcusible). I'm saying, like the Philadelphia guy who said you have to speak English to patronize his store. It's my business, I own it. Not casting aspersions or insinuating anything, just curious as to the responses.
