;D Congratulations to Brian Krohn of Augsburg College for winning a Rhodes Scholarship, Augsburg's first ever. Augsburg plays D 111 athletics, and has D1 academics. Could/should this be a model for Valpo?

Augsburg & Wartburg have won most NCAA d-3 wrestling championships over the last 10-15 years. Two d-3 colleges very much a like ,with super academics & athletic programs.

I doubt very much that Augsburg or Wartburg has ever had a sporting event televised live nationally. That, my friend, jj, is when your east coast elistist friends will take notice.

I doubt Valpo has ever won a national champioship ,these two schools have won many & been to final 4-8 many more times. In NCAA wrestling circles these schools are more well known than Valpo in basketball. I think both are also into round 2 of NCAA fb d-3 playoffs. Not promoting either over Valpo ,but be careful of what you say.

Um, have those schools ever had a sporting event televised nationally? td's point wasn't about comparing achievements, it was about comparing exposure.

Pres. Heckler has informed the alumni that endowment funds could suffer a 30% loss or more. So, why fund football when the real need is scholarship monies and operating expenses? A 30+ loss to UNC or Purdue is not going to increase our enrollment opportunities, Schlolarship monies will. Drop football and/or go D.3. We need the money.

Being you Valpo grads are a little quick for me ,I decided to go to Augburg & Wartburg sites to see if I could find out anything about them being on National TV.Looks like other than maybe some local cable, probably not....but you ought to go to Wartburgs & look at new 200,000sq ft.sports/wellness center ,orange track& fb stadium ,other facilities ,even have their own own cc course with some type of computerized timing ,etc. Must be the rich Lutherans alums

A 30+ loss to UNC or Purdue is not going to increase our enrollment opportunities, Schlolarship monies will. Drop football and/or go D.3. We need the money. More absolute nonsense. Every endowment will suffer aproximately the same. So Harvard will be down maybe 3 or 4 BILLION!! They should probnably drop football too! If you want to be a small school that no one has heard of then jj has the plan. Enrollment will drop, alumni support will drop and soon we will be facing the same situation which most all other Lutheran schools face. Take for example, St. Olaf. Outside of Valpo probably the most well known Lutheran school. Now take that degree to anywhere outside of the upper midwest and you will get a who? where? or what? Valpo's national exposure, win lose or draw, is a big plus in recognition and thus a big plus for the worth of the degree. Notre Dame just lost something like 55-0. Suppose they should drop football and play D3 as well. Short term thinking is where you are at jj. Maybe your age has something to do with that. As for Augsburg being in the same league as Valpo academically, simply check the US News rankings. Not even close.

However, my parents (who did their undergraduate work there, before grad school at U of Minn) would be quick to point out that anyone watching choir events on national TV around Christmas will definitely know the school too, as well as anyone who watched Golden Girls lol.

Huh - I would have guessed St. Olaf to be better known nationally than Valpo.
St. Olaf's choir is quite famous, and they're pretty good academically.
Valpo is decent academically, and has a fair basketball team (with one very famous season). I don't think our football team has much of anything to do with our reputation. Probably it's important to some alumni and (fewer?) students. But, probably I'm prejudiced - football's not really my sport.

Well, it's hardly scientific, but:
St. Olaf returns about 1.4 million google hits Valpo about 1.3 million
So, they're comparably known to google. Probably Valpo's better known. (Adding Saint Olaf doesn't buy all that much. Adding Valparaiso adds a _ton_, but of course many of those are the city in Chile, or the city in Indiana.)

'72: Harvard will lose appx. $9 Billion in endowment funds and VU will lose appx. $50 million. TOUGH! If you recall, during Harre's first few years at the helm Valpo had to cut faculty, staff and programs in order to meet its budget. Enrollment also sharply declined. Now, we are faced with similar problems on a magnified basis. So, do we cut faculty, staff and programs in order to get our university in order, or do we drop non-essentials like football in order to save a few $$$? I'm glad I'm not making this decision but I'm sure we will do the right thing. And we thought Obama had problems.
