In regards to the above posted article, I'm curious what a "national search" means, because further down in the article, it says: "We'll form a search committee to help me go through the candidates," LaBarbera said. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but is Valpo out recruiting and courting possible coaches, or just sifting through resumes that come our way? How are we conducting a "national search"? It will be posted on an internet site for college employment, plus of course, on the Valpo employment site. There may be other sports specific sites, I just don't know VU72, what is your best guess -- will the Athletics Task Force recommend (1) a new football stadium, (2) a new fieldhouse connected to the ARC, (3) improvements to the ARC, or (4) a combination of 2 and 3? My guess is #4. What do you think? Paul And when do you think we will get a new track? I have no inside info here. I have spoken with a development officer, and, as you might expect, there are several pressing needs on the campus. A new education building, major dorm work and, substantial work to the centerpiece of the campus, The Chapel. Did you know that the windows are about to fall out of the chapel? Once you start renovations we will need to as handicaped stuff like first floor rest rooms and an elevator. As for athletics, my guess is a ronovated arc including a bowl type setting with chairbacks throughout, enhanced concessions and major work to expand lockerooms etc. Does anybody know that their is a third gym? I found it the last time I was in /Valpo. It is up over the ARC I think. When the bleachers in Hilltop are not rolled out, which they never are, then it is accessible. It is a lot of space that looks like it is never used. As for a fieldhouse etc, I really have no opinion. I would think the track will definitely be part of any development plan. It is all about money. They just haven't found a "lead" to put up[ major money.

I believe the softball team uses that gym for some of their workouts. I'm a little confused, are you thinking its not accessible unless the bleachers in Hilltop are rolled out? I remember Whitney taking me up there one time and we used the stairwell in the southeast corner of Hilltop. (My directions might be off, I think that stairwell is in the southeast corner) I'm not sure if there are other entrances to it. It was actually kinda cool, we went thru what looked like an old wrestling room. The mats didn't look like they had been used in years.

We did go througha room filled with old wrestling stuff. I'm glad to hear it is being used. It looked really dirty so I assumed it didn't get used very often. I may have not described the bleacher thing properly. Back in the days when Hilltop was the main gym. The side of the gym on the third gym side had bleachers that rolled open to nearly the ceiling. I presume that when they were open that they filled the space where the third gym is located. I may be wrong. Obviously, Hilltop doesn't have bleachers but I'm not sure if they have been removed or just never opened.

OK...this is the latest on the assistant coaches staying on and the possible new head coaches...
FootballCoachScoop was the FIRST TO REPORT (October 27) that Head Football Coach Stacy Adams would not be retained. According to our sources now, Athletic Director Mark LaBarbera is very interested in Ted Karras Jr. (Marian College Head Coach), Erik Raeburn (Wabash Head Coach), Kevin Donley (Saint Francis-Fort Wayne Head Coach), Lou Esposito (Saint Joseph's Head Coach) and Steve Englehart (Rose-Hulman Head Coach). We have also been told all four current full-time assistants: Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Sam Bernardi, Special Teams coach Robert Lee and Offensive coaches Chip Taylor and Josh Wissing, will remain on staff until a new head coach is hired.

From previous "national search"(es) done, I believe the companies look thru the resumes, and then they pass on the resumes that they feel fit the school to the AD, and then the AD may still form a search committee to narrow down these choices and help with the interviews of the candidates. Mark LaBarbara might do some recruiting of coaches in the area, but in most cases, the paid search firm will do 3/4ths of the narrowing down, and the final cut will be made by the AD and a search committee he or she will have.

Wow, if we somehow managed to lure Kevin Donley (Saint Francis-Fort Wayne Head Coach), I will do cartwheels down the office hallway. www.saintfranciscougars.com/football/coaching-staff/kevin-donleyAfter hearing our AD is interested in him, and hearing his staff was on our sidelines during the last game, I am officially getting my hopes up.

Another Homer-Scott-Bryce scenario. A wide receivers coach on Dad's staff, give us a break. Nepotism reigns. bull****!

G.I. JJ, if he brings his own staff, and they get the job done, who cares. Stop being so cynical about everything. It's not always a big, bad world out there.

I don't know if Coach Straubel still uses it, but the room that ValpoDad entered that looks like an old wrestling room is the room that cross country uses to meet in to find out practice plans and talk over any details from previous workouts, meets, and things like that. I know that Valpo had a wrestling team years ago, but someone who is more familiar with the reasons for its demise needs to go into more detail on that.

December 1st footballscoop.com "scoop" says that Walt Harris is interested. www.footballscoop.com/?cat=24I don't know how credible the rumor is, but at least they didn't steal this one from a NW Indiana newspaper. Five years ago, Harris coached Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl...
