Frat's DON'T get kicked off campus for "innocent" college pranks.....Period!!!!!! I dunno, sometimes it seems kinda random. We had a couple guys get in trouble just for collecting a few dozen street signs from around town. Had a friend who in the early 80's ran through an intersection striking the rear of a crossing car sending it into a concrete barrier. The accident killed the two people in the other car because some kids wanted a few signs for their bedrooms. Took him years to get over the nightmares.

By the way, did you know Matt Erickson?[/quote] I did not. I remember wandering over to Theta Chi's one wintry evening when a party was in full swing having a few beers, then peeing on a huge pile of coats that were laying on a bed. I regret a lot of the stupid things I did in college but that isn't one of em. Good thing no one saw you! there was one instance this last year that saw several upperclassmen brothers lay a serious beating on one of the freshmen-serious enough to involve a hospital stay, and discussion of aggravated assault charges. Thanks - this answers my question - definitely crossing the line here.

So much for a Christian university. He without sin cast the first stone. Their must be many saints at VU.
There is scant information about the incident, only alleged information. The Theta Chis ignored the Greek Judicial Board (a kangaroo court) and were found guilty in abstencia. They needed Hoover and Otter to defend them. If sources are correct, it was not bobbing apples, rather "forcing" pledges to wear white t-shirts. Such "extreme" hazing.
The record is pretty clear. Theta Chi is the seventh major fraternity to be kicked off campus since the resurgence in the 70's. It is a sad state of affairs when the "Weeps" (Sig Ep) are the strongest fraternity on campus.
How does Valpo ever plan to compete with other universities?

How does Valpo ever plan to compete with other universities? First off, times have changed from the 70's don't you think? Getting drunk out of your mind, throwing up on somebodies yard and then driving back to the dorms isn't going to cut it anymore. I don't know what the state of affairs are at Valpo now, but do know that the Phi Psis are one of, if not the best house on campus. This after nearly being kicked off campus in the late 70's and making a total comeback. I think the notion that Frats can't have a keg at the house anymore is over kill. Nonetheless, the frats serve a very important purpose and hopefully will continue to flourish.

To VU72
Of course you illustrated the extreme. The real VU. They have a "safe bus" so students who drank can get back to dorms safely. What does VU police do? They stop the bus, make every student blow and any presence of alcohal and the strudents were put in Porter County jail. The arrests were one step below a felony.
A keg in the fraternity house would result in capital punishment!! With ony five fraternities out of twelve left and only two with any presence, you can say that Greek life is dead. And that was the only life there was on VU campus.
Theta Chis lasted 40 years longer than the university wanted them to. Valpa might be a "good value" but with an admittance rate over 85%, they are no longer getting some top students.

vuweathernerd "bitter are we?" No, nerd, not bitter. Disappointed. For all of the postings railing the VU OX, nobody really knew us. We were a REAL fraternity, kept to ourselves, hung out as brothers. It is a real shame when the administration took actions based solely on hearsay. That's correct. The incident that gave rise to the ultimate expulsion was handled by a kangaroo court. The accuser did not "press charges", Dean Jenkins did. The brothers were not allowed to confront the accuser (since he was not there). If this was handled in a regular court of law, there would have been no action. To the credit of the brothers, they wanted to get this matter behind them. So instead of stonewalling the administration that could not prove anything due to no witnesses, the OX brothers sought compromise to create a better working environment going forward (I think this is a consistent with Christian ideals). The response, expulsion. So seven out of twelve fraternities are gone. What once made Valpo a strong and proud campus has been devastated. So Valpo can tout their "value", but they don't have "values." Maybe this is why a school that admits 98% of all applicants has seen undergraduate enrollment decline by 1,000 students in the last 40 years. Killing the 5 vibrant fraternities including OX might be the cause. I am glad that those of you who were not part of our organization are beaming!! Funny, you can't get in, but you are proud to push us out.

i've never been in a fraternity nor really wanted to be in one when I was in school (not at VU), but I always wondered exactly what purpose they serve. I'm not trying to be flippant, I just never understood the purpose for these groups. The things that are always talked about publically is the parties, kegs, how many girls they can get, etc. The benevolent things that frats supposedly do are not publicized very well and that may well be the biggest problem. Just an outsiders observation.....

Great post gonewiththe70's. I was with the " band of brothers" when we went national back in the early 50's. Fond memories. Unfortunately,my wife and I feel as you do that Valpo is in a freefall. Our athletic programs stink and we have compromised ourselves academically. I read in the INDY STAR that Dr. Bobby Fong, president of Butler U.,has resigned and accepted a similar position at Ursinus College in PA. Good move. Fong,in his 10 years at Butler has improved BU's standing in both academics and athletics and BU has sure leaped ahead of VU in both areas. Leadership was his forte. With degrees from Harvard and UCLA he sure outshines our guy who has degrees from Elizabethtown and Catholic U. "You are what your record says you are."

Fraternities do not exist to "publicize" their activities. They exist to for their members, not for the general university. But our motto that we followed was "Alma Mater first, Theta Chi for Alma Mater." Too bad our Alma Mater has little respect for us.
I could go on for pages of the positive actions in the fraternity. That is why a strong fraternity has such a tight bond.
As an undergrad, one of our actives was discovered to have cancer and had a portion of his leg amputated over Christmas break. When we returned, we were devastated.
Then the roudy jock house decided to set the Guniess Book of World Record longest basketball game. Besides setting the record, putting tiny Valpo on the map just like Bryce Drew and raising money for the American Cancer Society, we created a campus event.
I worked with other students to briefly reinstate the homecoming tradition of the German band roaming through campus signalling the end of classes and the beginning of homecoming weekend. Most professors let their students leave class. A decades old tradition was restarted, a unique social aspect.
It must be the German in the Lutheran. A need to be dictators that have destroyed what was charmiing and unique. Fraternities helped the University grow from the 40's to the 80's. And by killing them, the University has declined.

Maybe there should be more positive publicity of the type you just mentioned. Just a thought....
