Yep. All us students got an email on Monday with all the logos. It will be reviled to the public on Aug. 20. Freudian slip? I caught that too, StL! Was just going to comment when I read your post. Haha. I guess we know valpo10's thoughts on the new logos.

Will the new logo replace the "sissy" Crusader on the new basdketball floor? Sure hope so. i personally prefer the old one to the one that's coming. and i'm not the only one. You mean the one where the Crusader is in the same stance as the Fighting Irish?

You mean the one where the Crusader is in the same stance as the Fighting Irish? yes. but i don't look at it as the crusader being in the same stance as the fighting irishman. i think that in their decisions to make the mascot "more defensive," they have in fact made it less humane. there is no face on the new mascot, which could make it seem more savage. my gut's telling me that this change is the first step towards changing the mascot to something like the knights. (which, btw, doesn't really remove the medieval connotation that people supposedly think of with the current crusader mascot. those middle ages crusaders were knights.)

I suppose you'd at least escape the necessity of being on a quest to kill "heretics" (Alibgensians, Byzantines), Muslims, etc.
I'm sure many knights were no boy scouts, but I guess we can think of stories of Camelot and so on. I suppose the first crusade was among the less objectionable, but what a way to guarantee access for Christian pilgrims! Religious tolerance at the point of the sword, indeed.

Actually the knights principle function was collecting taxes.

A program on the Middle Ages I saw on the History Channel said medieval knights had more in common with Tony Soprano than Lancelot.

"so really, the knight should be considered just as "offensive" as the crusader. political correctness" Nah. Neither are any worse nicknames to me than the various Buccaneers, Blue Demons, Demon Deacons, Warriors, Vandals, Bombers, Blue and Purple Raiders, Marauders, Delta Devils, Battlin' Bishops, Pirates and Vikings (but not Norse) etc. that are around. My favorite though, is the Puerto Rico at Mayaguez "Tarzan and Janes". I bet they have an interesting logo

Not to burst anyone's bubble who may like these, but for what it's worth... I just showed these to a high-level account director from a major advertising company. The response was quite negative(and I quote), "These are the most amateurish logos I have ever seen. It looks like someone threw Clip Art together." She pointed out numerous design flaws, branding and messaging issues, etc. Hardly a glowing endorsement...

The athletic logos in particular are going to be tough to use because of the lack of flexibility they offer. Can you imagine how hard it will be just to embroider that "knight" logo on a jersey, let alone the many other obvious shortcomings?

The athletics logo is still growing on me, but I really like the general university logo (with the flame and the V). It is cleaner, more modern, and more recognizable. You have to be kidding if you think that our former logo (the ugly V with the word VALPO just slapped on it) is better. But let me caution the doubters: These logos haven't actually been announced yet. I would suggest trying to put off your thoughts on them until they are actually unveiled, explained, and implemented.
Let me go out on a limb and say that after hearing the explanation behind these logos and hearing how they came about and why they were chosen, I have no doubt that these logos are better for the university and were the right decision overall. Our previous "marketing" department and campaign was a bigger mess than most people realize.

If they have not been announced then why am I getting stuff in the mail already with the new logos??? The unveiling of the new branding system takes place at the Opening Convocation this year. While you are receiving things in the mail, that's because they had to start getting things out so that they'd be ready for everything else by the time it was unveiled. There is much more to this than simply a "new logo."

On VU's main site there is a link to this year's upcoming convocation. According to the link, the convocation "will feature an introduction to Valpo's new brand identity." Not sure what that means. Didn't know we were going to have a new "identity." I would think if that meant a name change (Knights), then the new gym floor wouldn't have the name "Crusaders" on it. Guess we'll have to wait and see. I kinda like the new logo and athletics logo. The "flame" on the V can be taken as the flame of the Holy Spirit which, after all, would be appropriate for a university with a strong Christian heritage. Paul
