On VU's main site there is a link to this year's upcoming convocation. According to the link, the convocation "will feature an introduction to Valpo's new brand identity." Not sure what that means. Didn't know we were going to have a new "identity." I would think if that meant a name change (Knights), then the new gym floor wouldn't have the name "Crusaders" on it. Guess we'll have to wait and see. I kinda like the new logo and athletics logo. The "flame" on the V can be taken as the flame of the Holy Spirit which, after all, would be appropriate for a university with a strong Christian heritage. Paul Not the Knights. The new floor already has the Crusaders painted on it. Not sure about the logo however.

Like I said, a new logo is just a minimal part of this whole project. The university has embarked on developing a "brand" for the university, which is a term you will probably hear a lot more. I also was sent a photo of the new floor of the ARC, but it was such an unclear camera phone shot that I won't post it.

It would be a disappointment to change from Crusaders to Knights. After all, there are only 2 D-I schools that are Crusaders (VU and Holy Cross) to...oh, I guess there are only 3 D-I Knights. Whatever, still recognizable as Crusaders. Of course, the real life Crusaders...lost. Whatever, small detail

Will the new logo replace the "sissy" Crusader on the new basdketball floor? Sure hope so. i personally prefer the old one to the one that's coming. and i'm not the only one. You sure aren't.

I wonder what this will cost to phase out all of the old logos and bring in the new. As much as people tend to make fun of the cartoon mascot, at least it was recognizable and had some personality. The new logos and mascot look bland and a few decades out-of-date. :crazy It now looks like any other high school mascot you'll find throughout the country. The 'V' shield is an interesting move to spread the same themes across the academic and athletic environments, but I wonder how often it will be used without text. What is nice about the current 'V' is that you always clearly read 'Valpo' attached to it. I've really liked the 'swoosh' Valpo print that's been used for the last year or two, as with the mascot below.

On the topic of branding, Western Kentucky is attempting to lead everyone into calling the school 'WKU' and nothing else. The article mentions Miami of Ohio wanting to be called Miami University, which still differentiates it from the University of Miami. I know some of the athletic teams seem to drop the official university name and go for something like Milwaukee Panthers. www.kentucky.com/2010/07/11/1344136/call-wku-western-at-your-own-risk.html

Being one of the PA announcers for VU women's basketball, I can tell you that all the schools have shortened their names...University of Wisconsin at Green Bay, once known as UWGB, now wants to be called just Green Bay.....University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, wants to be called Milwaukee.....I have never heard Detroit Mercy being called anything except Detroit.....These satellite schools want their own identity and who can blame them. VU is known throughout the country as Valpo....good or bad, that's what we are referred to by almost everyone....

The new website is up, although there appears to be some broken links and small issues still.

It looks like the Horizon League website got a touch-up as well, and looks pretty slick! I like Valpo's new website as well, but not the logos...

Anybody who's just saying "I like the new logo" or "I don't like the new logo", I encourage you to go to valpo.edu/brand/index.php and actually read through some of the rationale, etc. behind the new branding. This isn't a comprehensive look, but will offer a lot of background and show how this is a truly good move for the university as a whole. It's so much more than just a logo.

From the new website:
Valpo Crusader "The new Valpo Crusader is simultaneously historical and progressive. The new Crusader has elements found in the Valpo Uhlan of the 1930s and 1940s, while at the same time wielding the Shield of Character. The grill, intentionally covering the face, creates a more inclusive possibility of the man or woman behind the helmet."
The new "V" is nice logo, but I still think the new Crusader logo isn't very good. We're trying to move back to the Uhlan? We now have a logo that looks more the Golden Knights from University of Central Florida.
I'll admit it, the old Crusader was goofy looking but had an element of fun. This new logo looks like we're taking things way too serious.
