Valpo is ranked 466th out of 610 schools. How did my son ever pass the bar exam?

Embarrassing. As a point of reference we should refer to the PRINCETON REVIEW and USNEWS & WORLD REPORT.

Valpo is ranked in the top 9% of schools in the country....how is that bad? We did better than Loyola Chicago, Wright State, UIC, Youngstown St, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Carthage, Oral Roberts, Oakland, Hofstra, Drexel, and Bowling Green, to name a few.

But, what fraction of that 6600 are totally non-comparables like junior colleges, etc? It was 6600 post-secondary schools?
Anyhow, interesting list. Trying to focus on undergraduate education. Not directly taking a "reputation" survey.
Tiny Wabash in IN does rather well - #42. The first Lutheran schools I notice are Gustavus Adolphus and St. Olaf, both around 100.
Bayor is 346. Butler 332.

Looking at the methodology a bit. Looks pretty corporate- and economics-focused, as you might expect from Forbes.
Average salaries of graduates (30%) Number of alumni listed in a Forbes/CCAP list of corporate officers (5%) Number of enrollment-adjusted entries in Who's Who in America (10%)
Freshman-to-sophomore retention rates (5%) Student evaluations of classes on the websites RateMyProfessors.com (17.5%) and MyPlan.com (5%)
Four-year debt load for a typical student borrower (12.5%) Overall student loan default rate (5%).
Evaluate how many students actually finish their degrees in four years: considering both The actual graduation rate (8.75%) The gap between the average rate and a predicted rate, based on characteristics of the school (8.75%).

OK - I'll check the numbers.
Of the 6,600 it looks like about 2600 grant four year degrees. I don't think I'd compare Valpo with a school that didn't grant a four year degree.
So, if you like, you might assume we're 466 of 2600 in this methodology.

Couple points: No one pays attention to the Forbes rankings. The Princeton Review, which people do pay attention to, recently came out with its list of the best 373 schools -- and VU is in it. Several of our competitors are not -- Butler and Drake, for example. The big daddy of the college rankings, US News, comes out with its rankings on Monday. Our ranking last year was #5, which to me was disappointing since it was our lowest ranking ever. Twice we have been #1 in our category, several times finishing #2 and, in recent years, #3 behind Creighton and Xavier. It will be interesting to see if we move up this year. Last year we fell to #5 since Butler and Drake overtook us. I think the main reason was our average ACT scores, which were 22-29. Drake and Butler were around 25-30. We have to adjust our admissions policies -- it is simply too easy to get into VU. Okinawa, you work in admissions -- do you agree? Paul

78 -- Of course we always try to attract more talented students academically, and I think you'll be seeing those ACT numbers inch up in the next few years as our new VP for Enrollment Management has time to implement his plan. Most people think that just because we're increasing enrollment that we're automatically just accepting more people. That's not true, and it is completely possible to increase enrollment while increasing the caliber of student we enroll. This has occured at all of our new VP's previous schools while he was in control.
I think it should be noted that we were ranked #520 in the Forbes list last year, so we made some progress. And Butler wasn't included in the Princeton rankings? What do you say about that, jj?

Butler may be in the PRINCETON REVIEW next. year. PR expands its list every year by adding 10-12 new schools. Helps with circulation growth. Come Monday (8/16),USN&WR will publish its rankings. I've heard a rumor, just a rumor, that Valpo has slipped out of the top 5. I sure hope not.

The 2011 edition is out. Will be made public at mid-night tonight for inclusion in tomorrow's news. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we are still ranked in the top 5 of MW Master's U's.

Creighton (100) 2. Butler (91) 3. Drake (87) 3. Xavier (87) 5. Valparaiso (86) 6. Bradley (85) 7. John Carroll (80) 8. Truman State (78) 9. Hamline (74) 10. Evansville (73) Key thing negatively separating us from the rest of the schools is our hideous acceptance rate of 91%. Just about any moron can get in to Valpo!

You are right. Valpo again made the top 5 list, but our acceptance rate is the worst of the top 5. Creighton - 82 Butler - 79 Drake - 74 Xavier - 73 Valpo - 91. Hell, if you can't get into the top 4,you always have Valpo as a safety net. Nevertheless,I'm pleased that we remain in the top 5. Go Valpo!

Ratings are always subjective. What interests me, however, is the alumni Forbes chose to list as Notable Alumni of VU. Don't get me wrong. I am glad they listed the 5 alumni they did, BUT how did they fail to mention Erik Hromadka, the CEO and Chairman of Global Water Technologies Inc. (GWTR.PK)? One day that company could be responsible for ensuring that every city, town and village has clean drinking water. :bowdown
