By March 4 & 5 will Valpo and the Region be ready to host the HL Tourney? Does anyone know what true preparations have been done? What motels will the teams stay? All in Lake County? Portage? Chesterton? All in Valpo? Is anyone preparing for the concessions that will be needed for the tourney? Who plans for these things?

Little early to be worrying about this in my opinion. Still a long way to go and this weekend is HUGE. Have to protect home court. I'm sure the staff has had some thoughts, but also don't think they have worried too much about it at this point. I do think the league would hate to have to come here with the tournament....but that would be part of the fun

It's at least fun to think about it!
What big events does Valpo host?
I guess the Lutheran basketball tournament involves a lot more teams and players? Perhaps they can take something from their playbook.
Didn't baseball host the tournament recently, in Gary?
The fans might be a different story (but how many really travel?). But, it's not really _that_ many people, is it? Six teams? 120 people? 150? 180? Doesn't seem like _too_ big of a deal. Should be no problem between Porter County + Merrilville.

I agree it is a little early for the board to discuss this topic.
As for VU, I'm sure that since this is a Horizon League schedule, all schools would need to have a contingency plan ahead of time. VU could have already reserved a block of rooms at various hotels, and release those rooms a few weeks before if not necessary.

I'm sure whoever is in charge of those details is at work on them. Probably with a little more urgency then in past years but that has always entered someone's mind since Valpo joined the HL. The point is it's never too early to discuss for good planning sake but maybe too early to buy tickets. That never stopped Cub fans from buying World Series tickets though!

Butler will probably have almost as many as Valpo just like the Butler at Valpo games the last few years. That could be 2,000 to 3,000.

Realistically, we have to sweep this weekend's games to go 8-1 in the first half and then repeat 8-1 in the second half. If we did that, one of the teams chasing us would have to run the table to overtake us. It's not impossible for us to do, but it would be a pretty amazing accomplishment. It means that we could never take a night off (obviously), never have a bad game, never run into a buzz saw that no matter what we do it isn't enough, never lose a late lead like we have threatened to do on many occasions, etc. We have as much chance as anyone at this point, but a lot has to go our way to make it happen. As everyone knows, there are NO easy marks in the HL.

Why is 14-2 suddenly the magic mark? Nobody ever won the HL season with 3 losses. My guess, without looking, is that the average number of conferences losses for a 1st place team is 4.

We're in 1st place and we control our own destiny. I'm talking about what we need to do if we want to continue to control our own destiny. Possibly we could win the conference with more than 2 losses, but at that point it becomes a crap shoot with several teams involved, tie-breakers, etc. By the way, 4 losses is not close to the average number of losses for a 1st place team. For the past 8 years: 1 year winner had 0 losses 3 years winner had 2 losses 3 years winner had 3 losses 1 year winner had 4 losses There is no way this year's winner will have more than 3 losses. This is not the Mid Con.

you would need different hotels so teams that are potentially playing each other are not staying in the same hotel. but if you only need to host 5 teams, won't be a problem finding hotels within 20 minutes. As far as fans, it's not like the games are on back to back days. The majority of Butler fans would travel back to Indy as would any fans from Chicago. Green Bay and YSU wouldn't bring (m)any fans. Only teams bringing a decent amount of fans who may stick around would be Cleveland State Wright State Detroit, and possibly milwaukee?

No need to go anywhere else. There are 5 nice hotels no more than 2 miles from campus: Courtyard By Marriott County Inn & Suites Hampton Inn & Suites Fairfield Inn & Suites Holiday Inn Express & Suites There are also numerous restaurants for players and fans in the same immediate vicinity (all within 2 mile radius): Bob Evans Broadway Cafe Industrial Revolution Kelsey's Steakhouse Strongbow's Inn TGI Friday's Chili's Red Robin Wagner's Ribs Gelsosimo's Maria Elena's Elcharo Viking Chili Bowl Pizza Hut Noodles & Company Dynasty Buffet Japanese Steakhouse Culver's McDonald's Wendy's Steak and Shake Taco Bell Dairy Queen KFC King Gyros Subway Quiznos Jimmy Johns Oberweis Cold Stone Creamery Starbucks Uptown East Cafe Add to that a 12 screen movie theater, shopping galore on the east end, and an extremely safe area, and I will guess that we have more to offer players and visiting fans in the immediate vicinity of the university than most venues in the HL.

Most conference tournaments have ALL of the teams stay at the same hotel (though, most are in predetermined cities). They use this opportunity to have events with the teams, a banquet, etc.
