Milwaukee got a 12 in 2003 and lost to Notre Dame by a point, then we got a 12 in 2005 and went to the sweet 16 by beating Alabama and Boston College, and finally we got an 11 in 2006 and lost in the 2nd round after beating Oklahoma.
That along with the seeds you guys have already posted leads me to believe that you would be no lower than a 13 should you win the Horizon League Tournament. A 12 or a 13 would be my guess.

SO... let me pose this... would we rather NCAA as a 14/15 ... or to the NIT with a winable matchup....Obviously the Big Dance is just that... but the NIT is still a big deal! This is ridiculous. Teams would rather be a 16 seed in the play in game then the champions of the NIT, no questions asked. The NIT is not a big deal (compared to the big dance). If the goal of any team is not to win your conference then get out of division 1!

Call me a contrarian, but I do enjoy a post-season run. Was beating Washington in the CBI a few years back better than losing to Michigan in 2000, as as 16 seed, 65-38? Maybe.
Obviously noone wants to lose a basketball game. Of course, the goal is to win the conference, and win the conference tournament. But, this season at least, that means going into the NCAA tournament as an underdog. If you feel like you're an underdog with a live chance at an upset, that's a lot of fun.
But, a little more equal competition in the NIT? It has a certain appeal, for me individually, as a fan. Not a bad consolation prize, anyway.
For the program, surely it's better to go to the NCAA. I'm sure all the players want that. As a fan, I'll mightily enjoy going to the NCAA - even if it's to get hammered in the first round (neutral courts have some magic, and I hope we'll do better than that, but we'll see what the matchup is). But, a lesser tournament with some post-season wins does have a certain appeal.

In the long run, you are better off getting your butt kicked in a first round NCAA tournament game than making a run in the NIT. You get next to nothing for playing in the NIT except travel expenses. You get a double share of your NCAA tournament money from the HL if you go to the dance. That extra money can go a long way towards your recruiting budget, which can make you a better team, which can help you have more NCAA success. Going to the Dance is also going to impress future recruits much much more than a run in the NIT.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but as long as we have a chance to go to the Big Dance, that's the only thing I'm even thinking about. Don't you want to be like these guys from Milw, WSU and CSU, talking about what seed they got when they were there? I know I do. It doesn't even matter what happened after they got there - only that they were there. As far as I'm concerned, we haven't really arrived in the Horizon League until we represent the Horizon League - and I'm not talking about in the NIT.

Oh, I'll go beyond you on this point. For my "Valpo Moves to the Horizon League" story to be satisfying, I want at least a win in the NCAA. Preferably a Sweet 16 appearance. An at-large bid, or alternately a 9 seed or better, would also be good.
We're not 9 seed or at-large quality yet.
I won't say "no" to an NCAA appearance, and certainly not to a win or two. And, yes, winning the conference tourney is a logical next step in the story that I mentioned.
But, apples to apples, for one post-season, which would be more fun? Losing badly in the NCAA, or winning a game or three in the NIT? I'm not 100% sure.

i'm with agibson. sure the big dance would be nice, but so is the prospect of hosting an nit game and giving something back to the crowd (especially if we can win). Here's triva for ya. Name the post season tournament champion on Valpo's schedule. interesting. i had forgotten about that.

If the NCAA tournament had expanded to 96 teams as proposed, Valpo (and two other teams from the Horizon League, Butler and CSU) would be a shoo-in for at-large selection. Having said that, I remain staunchly opposed to further expansion, as the tournament in my opinion should be for the automatic qualifiers and a reasonably small number of select at-large candidates. Further expansion would allow for, what, 13 teams from the Big East, 10 teams from the Big 12 and nine teams from the Big Ten to be included in the field? By the way, why does anyone on here think Valpo would ever be easy first-round fodder for some BCS conference juggernaut? You're in the Horizon League now. There's actually a better chance that you'll win your first-round game. After all, Horizon League teams have won first-round games for six straight years.

After all, Horizon League teams have won first-round games for six straight years. This. If Milwaukee doesn't win the Horizon League Tourney (Which they likely won't) then whoever does needs to represent the league well and win! Besides the 6 years in a row I believe its 10 years in a row our of 13 with at least one tournament win. I know I will be pulling for whoever goes to the tourney from the Horizon. (Heck we may even get 2 teams in ;D )

If you look at the leaders of conferences right now, Valpo is more highly ranked or nearly as highly rated than 18 teams. That translates to us being a 12 seed. Now, if we actually win the conference or the tourney we will be higher ranked than we are now. Throw in a few upsets so teams ranked lower than us get the automatic bids and we could easily be as high as a 10 or even a 9. As a 9 we would need the comittee to rate 28 teams worse than us. Right now there are 22 conferences ranked lower so we would need some luck and a very strong finish, but 10 certainly wouldn't surprise me if we get that far.
Aren't we just slightly ahead of ourselves??

Aren't we just slightly ahead of ourselves?? IMO yes! I think we should keep this kind of talk to a minimum.
