I think finishing fourth is best for us at this point (unless a miracle happens and STLU's scenario comes to fruition. Let me explain. If UWM finishes 1 and Butler 2 - Round 1: CSU over UIC, Green Bay over UDM, VU over YSU, WSU over Loyola. Round 2: CSU over Green Bay, VU over Wright State. Semi's: CSU at Butler, VU at Milwaukee. I think if it all happens this way, we will take care of UWM in the semis and then have a chance against Butler or CSU. THoughts? I think all that is entrirely possible...however the Round 2 and the Semi-s will be at the #1 seed, probably Milwaukee at this point...although Youngstown did beat Butler and took us to overtime. Nothing is guaranteed in this business...but this scenario might very well be the way things work. I do think either CSU, Butler or Milwaukee will lose this weekend...which changes a bunch of things depending on which it is....we just need to take care of ourselves and get back on the winning track. The rest will take care of itself...I've had gloomier days in my life, but not many....

I think if it all happens this way, we will take care of UWM in the semis and then have a chance against Butler or CSU. THoughts? I'll tell you this: if we get the 3 seed, Green Bay looms in the 2nd final round. That's either scary or just what you want if you're twice-stung Valpo. Not sure which way I go on that. However, your suggestion is certainly reasonable: it means avoiding the 2 and 3 seeds until the championship game, which is always viewed as a plus. I'm not sure it's not canceled out by some other consideration, but the only thing I can think of is: having to play the 1 seed in the semis. This year, that might not be a huge difference, given how clumped together everyone is at the top and that no one has flat out dominated the conference like we used to in the old Mid-Con and like Butler did last year. The miracle scenario (at US Cellular Arena): Butler beats UIC, CSU beats YSU, WSU beats Loyola (I'm predicting the Raiders beat the Titans tonight at the Nutter Center), Detroit beats Green Bay at the Resch Center (just because I hate all things Green Bay these days). Green Bay beats Butler (Green Bay brings bus-loads of fans, plus 3rd time's the charm) WSU beats CSU (just because I can't stand the Vikings either and 3rd time's the charm) Valpo vs. Green Bay again, not too far from the scene of the crime. Again, relish or shrivel? That's a question that can only be answered (for me anyway) if the match-up happens. I honestly don't know the state of this team right now. Milwaukee beats WSU The Battle of the Wisconsins or a return to the scene of the other crime. Either way, Must-see TV.

The irony in all this is Cleveland State lost...This season is done, even if they make the NIT or CBI...it's over. Technically there is nothing even remotely ironic about that. Unfortunate, yes, but ironic, no. You're 100% right, techincally it's not ironic. I am one of "those" people who use the word incorrectly.

I also feel for Bryce and think he's probably in the same position as most coaches, but having said that, I thought the excuse-making in the postgame just didn't work this time. I'm sympathetic -- if I was in his shoes I'd be in shock and groping for some way to rationalize what just happened. I'm not angry with him; I'm just saying it didn't work for me this time, hearing about the unfair schedule, etc. Good teams prepare for that. Agreed. I thought that Bryce's complaints about the schedule in the post game came across very poorly. I was more disappointed by them than you were stlvufan. I thought he sounded whiny. He's normally more classy than that. I don't mean to pile on here, but the constant public complaining about the schedule, both before and after this stretch of games, has to have some impact on the players. Valpo is going through a tough stretch, but so do other teams. In early February, Butler played 5 games in 10 days (UIC will be Valpo's 5th in 11 days). You probably don't know that because Butler's staff was focused on things other than talking about how "unfair" the schedule was or worrying about how many games certain "other teams" were playing during that same period. College kids are much like your own kids ... they tend to perform/behave to the level of expectations set for them. Repeatedly running to the media to complain about how unfair/difficult/impossible the schedule is before you actually enter that stretch does nothing but give kids an excuse for not performing well.
