I think you'll find that Mr. Rick is in error (dare we say that) in his beliefs about us. Some of us, as stated, agree with his stand on the play...just not the use of the language he chooses to post in a public forum. And I'm one of those as well. That's the one problem I have with Rick, his mode of getting in people's face as a way of having a debate continues to rub me the wrong way. I've simply gotten used to it, but you shouldn't mistake that as an endorsement. I understand why he is that way, but that doesn't make it right. In this particular case, I too question his tactics. But in general, I am hesitant to knock prophets on general principle alone ("that they are superior to the rest of us"). I know the attitude lends itself to that interpretation, but I'd say the OT Hebrew Prophets - yes, the authentic ones - make Rick a piker by comparison, and as I've been reminded many many times, no one in the history of the human race ever got into people's faces more or was ruder to people than Jesus. He was constantly pigeon-holig people after a few moments with them. Mind you, Jesus can get away with it. Rick can't. Also, Jesus can ACTUALLY see who people are. Rick only thinks he can. The thing about the prophets is - the true ones, that is - they never considered themselves to be above the critique they were throwing at others. They sometimes thought they were the only ones who accepted the truth, but they always thought the truth threatened them just as much as the people they were called to speak to. And not all of them were officers in the church, either. One of them was tending his sycamore trees, minding his own business, when he got the call (Amos). They can come from all walks of life. I don't think Rick is superior to the rest of us (and I'm not convinced beyond any reasonable doubt he thinks he is either, though I agree it sure sounds like it sometimes). But you never know when someone like Rick is going to be called to speak the truth. If he ever is, we'd be fools to ignore it because it's him speaking it. RLH, you have seen some of the play, so you have a leg up on me in that regard, and as such, I don't blame you for reacting the way you did. As a fellow rubbee, I know he rubs you the wrong way. In this particular case, I do question his approach. I just don't question his intentions, that's all.

St. Louiee speculates: Don't go getting weird on me. For the record, I do not in any way, shape, or form consider myself a prophet. Nor do I, pal. No true prophet ever seeks the job, though. It is thrust upon them, and they try like manly men (or empowered women?) to get out of it, to no avail. Wannabees, on the other hand, chase down the calling like lawyers chase ambulances, and if they happen to find it, they immediately regret it and change their tune faster than a chameleon. Word to the wise. ;D

I don't believe in all of that modern day prophecy stuff. It's a con game used by hucksters as a way to get money from the gullible. So many "prophets" have been wrong. A genuine prophet is never wrong. But Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson and those of their ilk have been wrong so many times it ain't funny! I say what I think. I calls em' as I sees em'! I don't expect any rewards or that I will make any friends when I tell the truth as I see it. If I don't speak up, I feel as though I'm doggin' it. As Emerson wrote in his essay on Self Reliance(by my fuzzy memory):

I don't believe in all of that modern day prophecy stuff. Who said anything about "modern day" prophecy? I said "prophecy", period. So obviously "prophecy" is not a con game, even "modern day" prophecy. It CAN be, but it IS NOT, not by definition. That is precisely what prophecy is, Rick. Maybe you should study the word. A prophet MAY also predict the future, but that is not a requirement. I couldn't have said it better myself. Whether he knew it or not, he was talking about being a prophet.

OFFER STILL OPEN I offer a challenge to anyone who thinks that this play, Vagina Monologues, is vulgar or vile or obscene and who has the courage of their convictions to attempt to influence the administration to use another avenue in attempting to condemn violence against women. Here it is: There is an organization in Valpo called the Christian Community Coalition (I think that's the correct name). They oversee the homeless shelter and one or two of the houses for battered and/or mentally challenged women. If you can convince the university to stop this smegma-fest of a play and create another annual play or annual fund raising opportunity of some kind on the university campus to replace this vulgar and filthy play called Vagina Monologues, my family will donate $1,000 to that organization. The play must be one in which Christian values are highlighted, not female genitalia and is dignified and tasteful. I hope you take the challenge. Try doing something worthwhile so that both the means and ends are good things, not just the ends. This public offer will stay open until either the Vagina Monologues is permanently removed from the Valparaiso University Campus***(and I will make the $1,000 donation) or 45 days from today's date of January 4, 2007 (the date on which the offer will expire and no donation will be made), whichever comes first. ***A formal statement by the university permanently banning the play on university grounds must be made in writing.

Boy, I'm slowly catching up with the board since my vacation. The off-topic sub-board, of course, was my lowest priority since this forum's primary purpose is to provide a venue to discuss Valparaiso Athletics and, truth be told, the off-topic board was mainly created to keep the sports boards on topic. I did return from vacation in time to see Rick's VM-inspired signature, but saw that it had been removed before I could read this topic and add my opinion. But, let that not be a reason for me to refrain from chiming in, however late. Rick, I have to say that, though I was not offended by your language nor your viewpoint, I was very displeased with your backdoor attempt to take your political argument into the sports subboard via the signature and personal text; this, in spite of our having virtually created the off-topic sub-board for YOU and our rather clear desire to keep the sports board free of politicking, moralizing, or proselytizing. Rick, you need to find a venue that is more suitable for your campaign against the VU administration and employ a more persuasive technique than being repetitive, quoting others, and being a general irritatant. Oratorically, you are the equivalent of a protester who sets himself on fire--yes, you get attention, but you persuade no one. (It's no wonder you hate evangelists.)
