Just wanted to make a quick mention that Horizon League members through Sunday, Nov. 21 are 30-12 in all games, 22-12 against fellow Division 1 members and 7-1 vs. the MAC. Though we're still searching for that breaktrough win against a high-level BCS conference school, that's a pretty good start.

That wasn't quite accurate. Through Sunday, the HL was 27-12 in all games, 19-12 against Division I members and 6-1 v. the MAC. Through the end of tonight (Nov-22), the HL is 28-14, 20-14 against Division I, and still 6-1 against the MAC.

It's a bit early for it to mean much. But, Pomeroy's got the Horizon League at 11th. A step below the valley, a hair above the WCC. RealtimeRPI has the Horizon an improbable 4th, 1st in SOS. Valpo 65th, on the strength of one D1 game, the loss to undefeated Kansas.
The MAC? Not doing so well. 16th/17th.

I promise to update the out-of-conference results regularly, as I do on our board. Scores weren't included because they're not significant to the official college RPI (this isn't college football, after all ), but they could very easily be added if you would prefer. With 64 of 126 out-of-conference games in the books, the H League is currently ranked seventh on realtimerpi.com. That's the result of aggressive scheduling and mostly positive results.

dylan, we're also not playing almost all of our non-conference games as "money grabs". We balance our schedules with teams that prepare us more to play each other, and we don't get into tourneys that set us up to be tackling dummies, but give us some games against teams that we can be competitive with. It's a downfall to many of the tourneys that your guarantees end up being that you play one of the top teams, but you're stuck playing the teams equal to yourself just to get some games to make the tourney worth the team's time.

I'd like to see the HL commish work with the OVC, MAC, and MVC commishes, on getting some home and home series, maybe even a double header on neutral court for regional TV. 3-5 schools from each conference could be used, and matchups based on previous season RPI or other ranking source. That way, each school should get an even matchup, without hurting their RPI SOS.

Thought I'd re-post this from our board ... So, the Mountain West won its "challenge series" against the MVC 8-1, with the lone blemish TCU's 64-60 home loss to Northern Iowa. Very few of the decisions were by single digits. The series between the two leagues, one of which doesn't participate in the BracketBuster series and could be considered a high-major conference, expires after the 2011-12 season. How would you feel about a challenge series between the Horizon League and the MVC, two leagues that are much more evenly matched and are more geographically aligned?

I for one think this would be a pretty good idea. A nice guaranteed non-conference game against a decent D1 team rotating home and away sounds like a win win especially as the stature of the Horizon is on the upswing.

i'm with fwalum. i think it's a great idea. now the question is can we get the league execs on both sides to come to an agreement?

I'm probably alone on this, but I'd like to see a series with the MAC. Geographically, several teams in both conferences are in fairly close proximity. I also think beating the MAC head-to-head might have more significance because we recruit a lot of the same players. Just a thought...

You are alone as far as I'm concerned- Detroit plays BGSU, Akron, CMU, WMU, and EMU. We have played the Michigan teams way too much. I'm bored of playing the MAC.

That, and top to bottom the HL and MVC are much better matched, in my opinion. The MAC has a lot more bottom feeders than the HL and MAC (see: almost the entire MAC West).
