BigD, I'm afraid this is an argument you are going to lose over here.
Just sayin...

I'm sorry, but this has been stated too many times in this thread, Valpo was NOT invited to joing the Horizon League 3 times before they decided too. As a matter of fact, it has been documented before that they were excluded from the original jump by members of the old Mid-Con when they left the conference. I have had this confirmed by school officials and have no reason to doubt the story. As a matter of fact, Cleveland State and WSU were adamant that Valpo not be admitted. Now whether or not this was because of the fact that Bill Steinbrecher was a founding father of the Mid-Con or exactly what the reasons are, I don't know....but for clarity sake, Valpo was not welcomed until LeCrone and Labarbara got together. That is BS. WSU did not block Valpo from joining the HL. Our former AD pushed for Valpo to be invited to the HL before YSU was invited. We have always respected Valpo and wanted you in the HL with us. I think Dr. Steinbrecher has misled your fanbase. I did not hear the story from Dr. Steinbrecher but from the President and Vice-President of the University and the head basketball coach. I think you might be the one that was mislead.....It's all a moot point at this point, as we are now in the HL and enjoying the move

Interesting video I found recently: www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2011/02/11/sports/grizzlies/doc4d532de87a240981013148.txtAt about the 8:30 mark, a fan twitters a question: when will Oakland play Detroit again? Whenever the idea of Oakland comes up as a possible addition to the HL, we always mention that Detroit would probably block the move. The underlying (unspoken) assumption is that Oakland would jump at the chance to join the HL. After watching this video, I'm not so sure that's a valid assumption, though it's only aimed at having to be in the same conference as Detroit.

Detroit DID block the move, ten years ago when we ended up adding YSU (ugh). However, since then, a number of programs are in far better standing (Butler, Milwaukee, you guys are here now, Wright State, Cleveland State)...the point I'm getting at is that Detroit's standing in the conference is no longer as one of the top dogs, and they'd be hard pressed to throw their weight around to keep Oakland out this time around.

Does it take majority vote or does it have to be unanimous? My purpose in posting today was to wonder if the invitation would be rejected by Oakland now. That's a thought that had never occurred to me before. Kampe doesn't really address that particular question, he just says he's done trying to schedule Detroit because he's fed up with the exercise in futility. It may well parallel VU's efforts to renew it's rivalry with Butler pre-BracketBuster (2005) and that chasm has been bridged and I think any hurt feelings have been buried forever since then. Maybe the same thing would be possible with UDM and Oakland.

I think we have only only regret in leaving the Mid-Con/Summit League.
Neither our players or fans ever got to experience travel in winter to the Dakotas. They are left only with the fond memories of bonding during the 11-hour plane/bus/train trips to Southern Utah.

If that's true, we came closer to blowing our chance to join the Horizon than I ever thought.
The YSU addition without adding Valpo was maddening to me back in 2001. To think Oakland was one vote from becoming the 10th is quite frightening. We could have been building the program from 2002 onward and re-loaded while the NCAA trips were fresh.
What was YSU's first year competing in Horizon?

2001-02 if I'm not mistaken.
Good memory, Big D.
I wonder, what's the amount of votes needed to remove a school from the conference? Because I can't think of anyone who has a good reason to keep YSU.

In case you haven't heard after next year Southern Utah is moving from the Summit to the Big Sky.

Yes, Southern Utah is moving to the Big Sky. Centenary is moving DIII. They are adding the University of South Dakota. The conference will have 9 in 2012. Question is, how long will the summitt league be around?
