Alan Harre clearly approved of the naming as he was at the dedication. His name is on the building. Just a curiousity.

Probably didn't need the extra information for the prominent "eye-catcher" for someone new to campus, or had never been on campus before. I know for the "simpleton", the KISS method makes sense for the signage.

Interesting how the new signage simply says "Valparaiso Union" rather then Harre Union. It doesn't say "Library". I remember something about the Union being called just the Union for a reason. The Harre naming was at the insistence of a main donor or some such thing. What do you know about this? That particular sign I posted a picture of was in place before the new union was formally named the "Harre Union." On the newer signage (like the ones by the north entrance, for instance), it says "Harre Union."

Since the old union is slated for demolition this month, I went out and did a photoshoot before the construction fence was erected around the perimeter. I will be posting the photos over the next few days. Enjoy.

Okinawa, I really appreciate the photos you post. I know the old union has been a fixture on campus for over 50 years, but I for one am glad it is coming down. No offense, but it is simply an ugly building that detracts from the look of the campus. VU made the right call to bring it down. Hopefully they either have or will make the same decision regarding Huegli Hall. Paul

That's correct. Once the new academic building opens, my understanding is that Huegli and Miller will be torn down.

Spent a lot of time there back in the day. While I know it is not the prettiest building I am kind of sad to see it go the way so many of the buildings have gone from my time at VU.

I don't know why, but it just seems like the university could use the old Union as the replacement for Huegli Hall? Sure, it doesn't provide the most adequate office space for all the professors currently hiding in Huegli, but it has ample space for department meetings and advising space when it comes time for academic class advising.
