phi delta theta is no longer chartered on vu's campus. apparently they were expelled from campus in 2002. does anybody happen to know why? I'm not sure why, but apparently they were able to come back to campus starting this Spring, but obviously they chose not to.

Like the Theta Chi's,they had the audacity to serve beer to underage students. Hell, that was the norm when I was there in the 50's. We vets needed our beer and the U. didn't (couldn't) restrict us. Same with the KIPS.Thurston was a prodigious beer drinker, but I could out chug him. Chalk one up fot the Chi's.

Weren't the vets normally of legal drinking age?
Heck, was the drinking age in Indiana 21 back then? Was it just select states that had it at 18?

How many fraternities are still on campus? Back in my day Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon ruled Mound street. Now only one of them is left. My how the mighty have fallen.

Now there are only two left on Mound Street: Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Kappa Psi. But there are 9 fraternities total.

How many fraternities are still on campus? Back in my day Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon ruled Mound street. Now only one of them is left. My how the mighty have fallen. It is sad. Let me give a small history lesson for the younger members of this board. When I was a freshman, there was only one house on Mound Street, and was the Phi Psi house, which sat on the same site where the current one sits. The old house was similar to the others scattered around campus, built in the 20's or older, and in bad shape. The University proposed building a fraternity row of sorts and either bought out the other houses or helped finance the relocation in some way. I'm not firmiliar with those details. In the spring of 1969 (as I recall), six houses moved to Mound Street. Lamda Chi sat on the site across from the Sig Ep house. The TKEs occupied the house next to the Phi Psi house which is now a Christian Housing unit of some sort. The PIKE house was across the street from the TKE house and of course there was the Phi Delt house. All were basicly identical except brick color and some minor interior changes. It was clear to us at the time that the University had in mind that the frats would fail and they could convert these to student housing at some point. Obviously, this did happen at the TKE house. The Phi Psi's almost failed but reorganized in the late 70's and now are among the best houses once again. The OX house was always at the same site as are the Sig Pi and Sig Tau houses. Sororities, back in jj's day, had their own houses also. When they were moved to Sheele is a good question. Maybe someone can add to this. I think the Master Plan has some sort of reconstituted Fraternity Row built closer to the Old President's residence. I'll be dead by then. So what goes on at say, the Sigma Chi house? Are they building a house? Where do they meet and how do they compete with fraternities with their own house?

So what goes on at say, the Sigma Chi house? Are they building a house? Where do they meet and how do they compete with fraternities with their own house? I can answer this. Sigma Chi has a few smaller off-campus houses where some of the members live and hang out. As far as I know, they are content with their current situation, but would like a real house (probably without the university's help). I'm not positive though. The problem with the fraternity row idea conceived by the university is that fraternities don't want the university dictating their moves. If Valpo builds the houses, they suddenly have a lot more say about what goes on. If the fraternities own their own houses, it's a different story.

Theta Chi is known to have one of the most disgusting houses (on the inside), and I was told that their nationals recently came in and "cleared house," meaning they kicked out a bunch of members.

Sounds like the house is a METH. Just finshed a book titled METHLAND by Nick Reding (now # 22 on the NYT's non-fiction list. This is a story of the meth epidemic in several small towns in Iowa and throughout the MW. The prosecuter in Oelwein,IA. is mentioned as having gone to Luther College for his undergraduate work and to Valparaiso STATE University for his law degree. Hope this is corrected in the second printing. Anyhow, this book is a good read.It may not rank up there with the Lynd's MIDDLETOWN (Muncie), but as critic Rick Bass comments: "A valuable historical document that details the disintegration of life in small town America and the economic pressures that have contributed to that disintegration." VSU instead of VU,no way. Go Valpo!
