Hmm... Furman and Murray state both lost. So did Vermont, and Kent State (now on a three game slide). Maybe we have a chance.

Listed below are just a few reasons why this poll is kind of a waste of time. - There are 6 teams from the CAA in the top 25. - Loyola is still getting just as many votes as Wright State. I'm guessing most voters have never even seen the teams they are voting for. It's fun to discuss it, but I don't put much stock in this.

I'm guessing most voters have never even seen the teams they are voting for. It's fun to discuss it, but I don't put much stock in this. I mean, it's only a poll - sure. It has all the strengths and weaknesses of any other poll. But, I think that asking a bunch of midmajor coaches, "Who do you think are the best midmajor teams?" is a reasonable thing to do. The top and middle of the CAA seem pretty strong. I don't think it's crazy to have six teams represented - it's at least broadly consistent with e.g. Pomeroy's computer ranking. Loyola started 7-0 and has been on their way down. Wright State started 3-5 and has been on there way up. I don't think it's crazy that they're at about the same place (receiving votes) in the poll. I don't know what to make of either team, definitively, myself. In any case, as far as I'm concerned, it's good to be in the top 25! Can we lose even one game this weekend and remain? Why risk it, let's win both!

Put it another way:
By RPI the 10th-14th leagues are: CAA, Horizon, MVC, West Coast, and Ivy. (So that's the 1st-5th place leagues of the 23 considered in the poll.) Those leagues have 6, 3 (with 3 more receiving votes), 3 (with 1 more RV), 3, and 2 representatives in the top 25, respectively.
That maybe looks a bit distorted, or the top and middle of the CAA may really be that good, but I don't think it's a crazy distribution.

#20. Not bad, but the voters are a pretty tough audience! January 29 hosting Butler is the next chance for a big jump (and just before the Bracketbuster announcements!). Followed closely by the Cleveland State return game.
But, seriously, #20 is great. Are best showing since... ?

These polls are completely worthless, except as fodder for discussion.
After all, would you rather be ranked No. 48 in the RPI or No. 20 in the mid-major top 25?
Loyola's getting nine votes. What, are they grandfathered in this poll ... from 1985?

Well, they're kinda nice to be a part of, but yeah, not much import to it. The only truly important thing is to win on March 8th.
Now, do it as the #1 seed (and I'll move heaven and earth if necessary to be there in that case), and the RPI can be extremely important in terms of seeding.

I have a feeling, STL, that if Valpo gains homecourt advantage for the H League tourney, the fans here will become big, big fans of the format. As we learned in Milwaukee several times over the last decade, it's good to be king.

I will never be a fan of the format for the tournament....but that doesn't mean we shouldn't take advantage if it presents itself.

I will never be a fan of the format for the tournament....but that doesn't mean we shouldn't take advantage if it presents itself. Yes, it seems similar to all the class A high schools having to beat out the class 4A teams in the Indiana State HS Tourney before they went to class divisions. Think about that all you who advocate for the one class tournament. Of course in the cases of the IPS (Indy Public Schools) they have no chance no matter which class they play. The days of Washington, Attucks and Arsenal Tech winning the state tourney I believe are over and that is sad for many many people.

I went to Lafayette Jeff when we won in 1964....so I know what you say....BUT those people at schools like Wheeler and Morgan Township who have experienced state finals would always say the change was good one, and I understand that....but I still don't like the double bye....but if we get it, use the system

A topsy-turvy week in the poll. Butler, Old Dominion and Gonzaga (x2!) all pick up conference losses and plummet. Oakland and Coastal Carolina (!) are all above all three of theme. Cleveland State jumps back up to #2.
Valpo hangs in at #22. Wright State's not far out of it - if they sweep the Wisconsin road trip, perhaps they enter the poll?

It's frustrating to see several teams we've beaten up there above us.
