No reason to jump off a bridge after this one. Butler lost, Valpo has a game up on Wright State and beat the Raiders on the road. The last seven games are all winnable and a double bye is really what you're looking for.

A win tonight would have been huge, but a 1-1 split this Ohio trip will not be the end of the world IMO. 0-2 however will be.
It will be interesting to see how CSU does against Detroit in Detroit on 2/7 having played its third game in five days. That's the game I'm circling right now for a little help.

FTs attempted: CSU - 40, VU - 11.
Not sayin', but just sayin'.

FTs attempted: CSU - 40, VU - 11. Not sayin', but just sayin'. I don't really have a big problem with that. CSU was far more aggressive driving to the basket and thus drew more fouls. We continued to do the same BS of throwing up off balance hooks and finger rolls instead of going strong and looking for contact.

I only have a problem inasmuch as I did Saturday, with the wildly inconsistent standards of contact. VU couldn't get a call tonight (or Saturday) in the lane early or late, and then the opponent gets those calls in the paint all night. Go to the rim three or four times with no call and teams start looking for other ways to get shots. The "settling for jumpers" can often be a result of how a game is being called and not the other way around. Irregardless, that's a huge disparity, any way you slice it.

I was at the game and Valpo lost for 2 main reasons:
Norris Cole and Valpos lack of an inside game.
Norris Cole is legit. He is too fast for any of Valpos defenders. Buggs covered him as well as he could but fouled out early in the 2nd half (around 15 min left). Harris tried, Kenney tried, but Cole was too quick.
CSU's big men didnt score but they shut down Valpo on the interior. Van Wijk got blocked many times and Johnson never was a threat on the inside. If Valpo gets a chance to play CSU again they need to take it hard to CSU's interior, they were too soft tonight.
Little and Broekoff impressed me tonight. Someone was posting after the Green Bay that Broekoff needs to shoot more and I would agree but Waters and the CSU staff did their scouting and had a guy blanketing him all night. The fact that he still scored 15 is a testament to his shooting ability.
Wood was ineffective and this may still be lingering effects of his hammy issue. Does he usually create his own shot? The offense sputtered because there was no inside game and they spent the majority of their possessions passing the ball around the key.
Overall I was proud of this team on how they hung in the game. I felt like CSU was the better team tonight and it felt like they should have won by closer to 20 points. I thinks CSU's poor free throw shooting, lazy offense, and Valpo's heart kept this game closer then it should have been.
Rest up Valpo and take it to YSU on Saturday. Is anyone making the drive out? I am debating going to the game or staying in Cleveland and watching Butler upset CSU!

There was a story on ESPN a few years back about free throw disparity between road and home teams. I looked for an archive of it but I couldn't find it. As far as I can remember, the study looked at a random sample of D1 games over several years and came to the conclusion that the road teams had to shoot 2% better from the field to make up for the disparity in free throws in favor of the home team. Like I said, I don't remember the exact details. It went into a lot more depth. Long story short, there is a reason winning on the road is so hard.

I just got home and saw we lost; I haven't read any of the other posts, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned (and it probably has)...but it wouldn't surprise me at all if we beat YSU while Butler sucks it up and beats CSU...if that happens we are tied once more with CSU, with 4 of our final 6 at home. Just sayin'..... Paul

True but many of our fouls came in trying to stop their drives to the basket. Again it all comes down to shot selection. We took a lot of 3's , we missed a lot of 3's and they were off and running. If I could assume that Wood and Kenney were both 100% then I would have to conclude that tonight was one of those rare nights where we were both outplayed and outcoached. CSU is a very good team and took advantage of our lack of aggressiveness inside. I can't wait for the rematch. Homer will make adjustsments. As much as I hate Butler; if they win saturday it might give us both the tie and perhaps the tie-breaker. But for that to be possable both VU and Butler might have to win out. Interestingly, there is a pretty good chance that Butler might have to face UWM for a third time either as a 3 seed or maybe a 5. Don't you just love this years Horizon League?

Until the last 8 minutes, I had very little complaints about the officiating. The CSU player who went to the line for 3 FTs fairly early in the first half was barely touched by the Valpo defender. There was another one early in the 2nd half but I've forgotten. But Joe Latas was guilty of a moving screen all throughout Aaron Pogue's time on the bench with 4 fouls and they never called it once. Then Valpo was getting hammered on some shots near the basket and there were no calls. Perhaps there's something VU players can do to make it easier for the refs to call it, but that shouldn't be necessary if there's hard contact and it looked like it on several plays. There were several bad calls that went Valpo's way too. In any event, to repeat the oft used phrase, it's not why we lost. What I saw was too many bad shots (Jay Harris). Take a gander at the video page that presents the archive of the game. Look at the caption: "Cleveland State hosts Valparaiso in Summit League play." Who's the idiot who typed that into the webpage? Also, Erik Buggs' great defense doesn't do us any good if he's nursing 3 or 4 fouls on the bench. My prediction around Christmas was that we would go 1-3 combined against CSU and Butler. We did one better: 2-2, and I'm not exactly heartbroken over tonight. I did not think we'd win anyway. CSU is probably the better team (though I love the way they shoot free throws). I'm still concerned about the Wisconsin trip. We may end up 2-2 against them, which would bring me back to my 12-6 prediction. It's hardly a surprise to lose tonight. What I don't want to see is a loss on Saturday. It sounds weird to say this, but we're playing better than Butler right now, so we should win on Saturday. Some good things to point out: only 5 turnovers. CSU had 13 (which is not that bad either). I'm watching the VU postgame and the graphic identifies Ryan Broekhoff as Erik Buggs. That's just ridiculous. The Wolstein Center and Hinkle remain the only HL venues we haven't won at yet. I do think it is funny that Waters was whining down the stretch in a game where his team went to the line a lot more than we did. Come out with a fire in the belly on Saturday, says Rowdy, and I like that. And I still would not put it past Butler to shock CSU on Saturday. For the first time in HL play, I'm rooting for Butler instead of against them.

I said all along that 14-4 will win the league, and I still believe that. We need to go 7-2 the second half and that means we have one more loss coming somewhere on the schedule, but with 4 of our last 6 at home, I'm feeling pretty good about where we stand. At present, if Butler beats CSU again, we have all the tie-breakers, so let's hope it happens. i think we have the tie-breakers anyway as long as we do our part...at any rate, we're in good shape for at least the 2 seed, as long as we don't give it away and I don't think this group will

I also feel (and hope) that Butler will bounce back strong and give CSU fits, ending up with a CSU loss. VU could run the table, but we need to continue to work on rebounding, getting good looks from 3-pt land, and hit our FTs. We also need to stay healthy. If VU does win or share the title, Rod Moore may be the MVP - Most Valuable Person!
