Should a player who is only capable of making 33% of his free throws be playing Division 1 basketball? Yes. If it is someone who can play as suffocating defense as Buggs, definitely a yes.

Defense is an attitude and it can definitely be taught. There are hundreds of guys playing d2 basketball right now that could play as good of D as Buggs and are just as fast and can hit 70%+ of their FTs.

You should quit your day job, recruit for the basketball program, and get a few of these guys to transfer to our program. In the mean time, I will stick with Buggs' tenacity despite his free throw shooting flaws. Let's be a little optimistic.

Get a quick kid that can shoot free throws and score and a good coach can teach him defense.

Now wait a sec, let's see if I've got this straight:
Coach Drew has been coaching/teaching how many years now? 32? He has how many wins as a D-I coach? 635, isn't it? Seventh winningest still-active coach? He spends hours and hours every week--nearly every day, actually--with each of his players, and knows all of their pluses and minuses, strong and weak points, more than many parents know their offspring?
And some of YOU are presuming to tell him what he's doing wrong, who should be playing, and when??
How Absolutely Ludicrous.
Some of you sound like a guy who sits behind me in the ARC (hmmm, maybe one of you IS that guy!?) who seems to enjoy nothing so much as giving a running shoutout at the Coach, "advising" him what to do. Also screams at the players--ours, not the opposing team! Must be a season ticket holder, because this has been going on for years now. How ridiculous.
We won at the very end tonight because our #15 would not let their #11 get the ball down court far enough fast enough in those six seconds to shoot a basket, or even to pass it to someone else who could. Lord love him--as do I!
Go team--

Buggs is a good defender and overall player for 90-95% of the game, yes, but does not need to be in during the closing offensive positions if a close game. As has been stated by several people, any opposing coach will foul him with a 67% chance he will miss the free throws.

Anybody that thinks just because Homer has been coaching for so long and knows his players so well means he can't make a mistake. Putting Buggs into the game specifically on offense in that situation was absolutely stupid and a mistake, especially considering he had two timeouts left that he could have used to get him back into the game when we were on defense. FYI, 269 of Homer's wins are at NAIA schools Bethel and IUSB. If you are going to come on here and berate others for their opinion at least get your facts straight.

Just got home (after a little post game celebration). I don't know how much you could tell on TV, but the defensive intensity was absolutely amazing on both sides. I kept waiting to see who was going to run out of gas first, but neither team gave an inch right to the end. Somehow, we found a way to make one more play than they did. What a game!

Okay--I should have said "seventh winningest still-active D-I coach with 635 wins overall."
So how many games have you coached, and how many have you won? I won't call you stupid, but I'll stick with his judgment.

Two great defensive kudos must be given tonight...one for us and one for them.....Duggins absolutely did a super job on Broekhoff tonight. Denying him the ball ,a nd never letting him get into any sort of shooting stance......and for us, the job Matt Kenney did on Duggins was equally as outstanding. Coach Paul Curtis and I were discussing both of these efforts during the game. Very few of Duggins points came when Kenney was guarding him, and Broekhoff only got off 4 shots all night. I love to see that kind of effort, on both ends of the floor.....

I can't argue a bit with the comments about Buggs being inserted for offense. Inserted for defense? I'm fine with that. But Jay Harris for offense, please. Jay Harris is only in the game to get fouled not for offense. Jay makes FT's. Buggs does not. Period. Jay Harris is not half bad running offense. It is completely worthwhile to consider that a good tradeoff for someone who shoots 33% from the FT line. Buggs is the better defender by far, and we need him, even in the final minutes. I think you meant to say all 3 games we had in 2008 went down to the wire.[/quote] Actually, I meant "that" year, not "last" year. Slip of the tongue...

Interesting posts from Wright St's forum about the game: "Valpo's mascot is hideous." "I love the way Valpo's players move without the ball. They get a lot of back door passes for easy shots. I wish we moved the ball like that." "All of those missed FTs are killing us." (We aren't the only ones in that boat). "Hello middle of the pack in the HL. This will drop us from 3rd to 5th place." "That was tough loss to swallow. Only if we could have finished the game a better. I will say Valpo does the best job of running an offense in the league. They are the best at always looking for the open man and getting clean, open looks." I agree with all of the comments especially about the mascot Good game tonight. It really is enjoyable to watch your team's ball movement. Good luck the rest of the year. Thanks, BigD. This tourney, wherever it ends up being played, is going to be intense and nerve-wracking. Not sure I would have it any other way.
