Thought I'd provide some background for discussion about a possible NIT bid.
Valpo's current RPI: 70, 21-11 (14-7) Top 50 RPI wins: Cleveland State (40), Butler (45), Missouri State (41) Top 100 RPI wins: Oakland (57), Milwaukee (99) 200+ RPI losses: Toledo (335)
HL RPI Rankings 2011: 11 2010: 14 2009: 12 2008: 11
2010: Wright State, RPI: 80, 20-12 (13-7) Top 50 RPI wins: none Top 100 RPI wins: Sam Houston State (70) 200+ RPI losses: Loyola (213)
2009: Green Bay, RPI: 71, 21-9 (13-6) Top 50 RPI wins: Butler (24) Top 100 RPI wins: Cleveland State (52), Wright State (93) 200+ RPI losses: Loyola (214), Youngstown State (239)
2008: Cleveland State, RPI: 65, 19-13 (13-7) (Made the NIT) Top 50 RPI wins: Butler (17) Top 100 RPI wins: Florida State (59), Wright State (84) 200+ RPI losses: Loyola (221)

Couple other thoughts on NIT.
1. There are 4 more teams in the NCAAs this year. That means 4 more teams that were left out of NIT get in. That's 100 teams for the two tourneys.
2. ESPN shows the NIT games. They like teams that people like to watch. We have had good games and good success with ESPN games the past couple years. The Horizon is one of their conferences.
3. The ACC is way down this year. Teams that would have been good gets for the NIT will not be worthy of anything this year -- Wake, Virginia, Miami, NC State. The Big 12 and PAC 10 also have some clunkers so there may be a few more opportunities for mid-major teams with 23 wins.

Although I hope you guys make it, I wouldn't hold my breath. It's a long shot for a number of reasons: - Only 1 bid, at best, will go to an HL team. Cleveland State or Milwaukee would get that. - The NIT is huge on picking teams that draw well--both TV and attendance. Therefore, they will pick a team with little more than a .500 record from a Power Conference over a 20+ win team from a mid-major conference. - The NIT is committed to giving an automatic bid to a team that finishes as regular season champs but does not win the conference tourney. Milwaukee would get that bid if they lose to Butler. (if Butler loses, they will probably still get an NCAA bid) Just my opinion as an outsider.

Not quite sure why some are so certain that the Horizon will get only 1 bid at best. First of all, if Milwaukee loses Tuesday then we are a lock for two bids...Milwaukee and Cleveland State. If Milwaukee wins, Butler goes dancing too and Valpo is a legit contender for a spot with a RPI of 70. One of the top teams left out of the dance, statistically.

our chances are better if milwaukee wins tuesday night. those in the know say butler's in no matter what. so if milwaukee loses on tuesday they have to go to the nit. as the worst of the top 4, that means we get bumped. so here's to the panthers winning on tuesday and screwing some other conference over.

IF Butler wins, you would be crazy to believe that the NIT wants 3 Horizon teams.
If Butler loses, all that does is bump one more bubble major conference team down into the NIT, thus knocking us out again.
No conceivable way that Valpo makes the NIT.

At first I thought "no way" on the NIT bid. But I think Valpo84 is right due to the ESPN games.
I also think the double Drews as coaches has kept Valpo interesting again even tho we haven't made the Dance since 2004.

My dad thought of this, but I am going to steal his idea. Baylor lost last night to Texas, it looks like they might be an NIT team if they don't do well in their conference tourney. Valpo heading down to Waco to play Baylor sounds like something ESPN would put together.

The last time NIT appearance for Valpo was because they were willing and able to travel to Iowa on short notice to play in the Tuesday night game. I can see the same opportunity this season with a Northwestern -Valpo game Tuesday night.

Both polls show us in...sure hope they're right. i hope they are right too, but neither accounts for Butler or Milwaukee, whoever loses that game, and one doesn't include Cleveland State. All three of those teams will be ahead of us for something....and I still think that Butler is the only sure thing in the NCAA unless Milwaukee beats them

Our chances keep taking hits. There are seven teams that will have received auto-NIT bids: Coastal Carolina (Big South), Fairfield (MAAC), Florida Atlantic (Sun Belt), George Mason (CAA), Missouri St. (MVC), Murray St (OVC), Vermont (AE). Only GM is pretty much guaranteed a NCAA big, and Missouri St. in my opinion is the only other one in serious NCAA debates. Kinda sucks that this many 1 seeds are losing this early, with many other subpar conference tourneys to go. I see Valpo in the CBI again.
