I think there are two approaches going on here: 1. "This season is basically over becauase it is less likely we get a 1-2 seed than it was last week and its harder to win a champion if you have to win 4 games instead of 2. So, let's save ourselves the hurt on not getting to the NCAA and just pretend its over" 2. "We don't know yet what seed we will place so let's not assume. Either way this is a very good squad and when 4 guys play solid games and the rest are contributing in positive ways we can hands-down beat any team in the conference - even 4 in a row if we need to. We are not satified with this last weekend or the step backward, but are confident in this team to learn from it and get back to thier best basketball for tourney time." I am a #2

I am a #2 I don' think I'm going to shock anyone when I say that I'm in at No 2 as well. The notion that its NCAAs or nothing is just not dealing with the reality of mid-major basketball. With the bigs really not being penalized, rpi wise, for not going on the road to play anyone, it gets pretty hard to get an at-large bid. Still, with our win over Missouri State, if we had run the table all the way to the conference championship, our story was certainly as good as others "on the bubble". We still have a chance to do that so even if we don't win thwe title, there still may be a shot. That certainly is something new and a first for Valpo basketball. So let's think about what might happen if we win three or four in a row and lose in the semis, for example. If its four, our rcord is 24-10, which should certainly be good for an NIT bid. So we end up in the NIT, maybe win some games, get a tv game and some money for the program/league. We end up with our best record in our Horizon history and set ourselves up for contiued and greater success going forward. Sure sounds lie failure to me.

I couldn't have said it better myself '72, and obviously I didn't. The disappointment over not making the NCAA, if we don't; or not winning the league, if we don't; should not diminish what has been accomplished this year. That's all I was trying to say...the season isn't over yet and to give up on it, seems ridiculous to me....

As disappointing as the losses at UWM and GB are, we have to keep some perspective on the season. Going in, I suspect most people would have been more than just OK with a season where the team is tied for third with two conference games left, and still a chance to move up from there. The bigger picture is that this team was down by 16 points at GB, and came back to force overtime and nearly won. The team also could have won at Milwaukee; Obviously it is disappointing to lose, but the team has got to know that they can score and will be able to win games. Perhaps the frustrating part is that the team has been so close, and could easily be in first place and control their own destiny. Yet this team is fun to watch, and could have a fine finish.

Very well put. They can still beat my prediction back in December (12-6), and they have already exceeded their previous high of wins in HL play and guaranteed their highest finish. And yet, that doesn't erase the frustration. They were so close in Wisconsin you could taste it -- literally. To let 2 wins slip through your fingers like that, there's no sugar-coating it, it hurts. Sounds like they are determined to survive and advance, according to yesterday's story (I forget which paper it was in). As frustrating as Cory has been to watch lately, I can't help dreaming of how good Van Wijk could be in the future. (By the way, does he have 3 years left after this year or only 2? I'm confused about that for some reason)

I don't think Van Vijk's issue is ability, but his ability to stay healthy with that bad back. I like most of what's coming back next year, but man is there going to be a huge hole in the middle if Van Vijk can't stay healthy. I am just invisioning Andrew Smith eating whoever is playing the 4/5 for lunch. Also, I am noping that Kurth gained the same perspective as Buggs from sitting out a year. If not, that could be more of a negative than a plus.

Forget about Smith. I'm envisioning Alec Brown of Green Bay scoring 30 and grabbing 15 rebounds. Oh wait, he almost did that on Monday night.

Excuses, excuses. As long as everyone is OK with finishing 3 or 4 in the league then the team will never be better than 3 or 4 in the league. You all should be really upset that this team had the league locked up and BLEW it. Three games against the bottom of the league. They needed to win out and didn't. We have to stop being happy with a program that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I have to agree with this comment generally. As it relates to tournament seeding, VU choked. Period. After having the opportunity to control our own destiny, the only way Valpo now gets the #1 or #2 seed this year is if we backdoor into it with a little help. 2002 Nebraska Rose Bowl anyone? I'd love to see this team go on a run and make it to the dance, but to me 6-4 in your last 10 games dictates otherwise. Not to mention that this team has never won more than 5 consecutive games all season, and to get to the NCAA's VU most likely will have to run six games with very short rest because of the GB loss. It is what it is.
