Court rush? Really? This is the fourth CONFERENCE loss for Butler. Let me lead this with I am very, very happy with this win today. ...now on to my glass half empty perspective. Seriously, storming the court??? I am with you there. Valpo was ahead of them in the CONFERENCE standings and was playing Butler at HOME. Really? Storming the court against an unranked opponent is uncalled for. No wonder they struggle against "name" teams if beating a good Horizon League team at home invokes storming the court. Act like you've been there before. That's what i said, as it was happening, and then I realized that these students haven't been there.

Woohoo! Now if it weren't for that home loss to GB ... that stings. But still, I know things are on the right track when my usually quiet alumni chums are sending ME "go valpo!" text messages following games. Now let's really make a splash and take back 1st place with a win against CSU.

Was at game. Few observations... 1- great win 2 - we should push for a new stadium - a complete bowl that can hold 10-12K 3 - mascot is worse than I thought it could be 4 - just FYI...I walked up to booth and bought tickets for section AA through the window for the "sold old" game (I realize these were probably found late or someone turned them in) One of better games at home since 1988 game against ND (still not sure any home game will ever reach that, can still see Anslem steal and fast break with Jones in closing seconds to send game to OT).

2 - we should push for a new stadium - a complete bowl that can hold 10-12K An arena that big would be completely stupid. I would like a new arena with a complete bowl, but the capacity should not exceed 6K. What makes the atmosphere so awesome at the ARC is that it is full. Why would you want to dull that great atmosphere by diluting the crowd in a big arena. Go to a Milwaukee basketball game, tell me how exciting it is (and that is in a city with a population 10x that of Valpo). Gonzaga built a brand new arena in 2004, the McCarthey Athletic Center, seats 6,000. Once again, in a city much bigger than Valpo and a program with a crap load more tradition.

A critique of the HL online feed... That was the worst updating of a score ribbon I have ever seen. Several times near the end, they gave one point for a 2pt shot and failed to update it for several minutes. Even as the announcers would say the correct score going into a TO, the ribbon was a few baskets off. This was awful as I was half listening/working on my laptop! In a game that is so close, its really bad to have the score be incorrect on the screen for any length of time, especially when points would be added one-by-one at random during play. Well, I don't know if that was the Horizon Leagues fault so much as it was WNDY channel 23's fault. I watched it on TV in Indy, and it was absolutely that bad on TV. Maybe the two aren't related, but it was awful

I suppose we were all watching the same production, whether on HLN, or various TV stations.
I appreciate that they had a clock, and if memory serves even a shot clock?, and i think both of those were accurate (e.g. video feeds from the actual clocks). But, indeed, the scoreboard was painful.

Regarding the stadium...
As an alum and a contributor, I cannot back the university putting money into a 10-12K seat stadium. Makes no business sense whatsoever and would never be filled. What I do recommend is putting in an endzone bleacher section on the east side like the west side (i.e. student section) has. That would boost seating to close to 6000 and provide a little more of a closed affect.
To justify building a new stadium with a reasonable number of seats (6000) in a bowl configuration, I think you would need to be filling the ARC every game. We filled it for Butler and others - but remember that the tickets in the upper deck are $10 even for games like Butler. The business case flat out does not work right now. Additionally, the university has bigger priorities in order to be a competitive all around school and has done a good job focusing on them (new library, new union, expanded engineering building, new buildings for arts and comptuer programs, etc.). They really need new dorms and student recreation facilities though - when I have visited other schools with my kids it is clear many have much better facilities.

VU cannot entertain the idea of a new facility. We cannot even fill the ARC, except for Purdue and Butler...and they bring 25% of the attendance. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the ARC. Now, if a wealthy alumni wants a legacy building that is one thng. VU should work on filling the ARC first. lowposter

Damon Lewis has his post-game piece up at Victory Firelight: victoryfirelight.com/2011/01/30/littles-double-daggers-drop-bulldogs-85-79/Including the Butler press conference audio (maybe an alternate take of the Valpo audio too?). Stevens gives a good post game interview! So does Homer, but very different styles. Early on, Stevens was asked if he was surprised by Johnson's success against Butler down low. Stevens called him "one of the best players in the league" and said he wasn't at all surprised.

They really need new dorms and student recreation facilities though - when I have visited other schools with my kids it is clear many have much better facilities. There will never be a time when improvements and enhancements to academic and housing facilities will not be necessary. That is a fact of life. If we’re waiting for those needs to somehow be met before we consider improvements to the ARC, improvements to the ARC will never happen. We need to find a solution to accomplish both – just like every other private university that offers D-1 athletics has to do. Filling up the ARC isn’t a litmus test for anything. That’s like a struggling restaurant that hasn’t upgraded its facilities in the past 25 years saying ‘as soon as we find a way of getting more customers, we are going to remodel.’ Business doesn’t work that way, nor does D-1 college athletics. There are no shortcuts to success. Either be willing to invest in your product to remain competitive or quit wasting your precious resources. If the university doesn’t want to invest to remain competitive in the athletic world it signed up for, it should go D-3. Our present facilities are perfectly suited for it. To your comment, "They really need new dorms and student recreation facilities though - when I have visited other schools with my kids it is clear many have much better facilities," I would encourage you to talk to Homer Drew. He will tell you that is exactly what parents of prospective recruits tell him about our athletic facilities. We lose prospective recruits all the time for exactly the same reason we lose prospective students - inadequate facilities in contrast to our competition. And by the way, I would submit that the university's academic facilities are MUCH closer to its competition (and in some cases superior) than are its athletic facilities.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the ARC. lowposter Seriously? Nothing wrong? It is one of the (if not the) worst venues in the Horizon League. High school scoreboard, few chairbacks, no tunnels, poor bathroom facilities, outdated decor. It is pretty embarrassing to see on national television. It's amazing we've done as well as we have! wh, you're spot on with your analysis.

Was a little surprised that in Homer's press conference he didn't really talk about Broekhoff's scoring in the second half. I really thought that he's 3's were daggers in the Butler defense. Yes, Little's 30 footer was huge but the 4 of 6 shooting of Rowdy really killed them.

Thanks fwalum I was a bit disappointed he was not mentioned or was even asked to be at the press conference after the Butler game? He played really injured against Green Bay and barely got a mention even after playing his heart out and hitting 15 points. Does coming from Australia hurt his chances of ever getting any accolades......gosh I hope not???
