Homer has always been very fair with his players. He also always recognizes senior leadership when letting his players be available to the media. Hence you had two seniors, one senior with a year remaining, and one player with his first breakout game this year. Looks like you can't get more at the table though Ryan and others were deserving. It would have been nice for Homer and others to mention Ryan, but having done a few similar types of speaking it is easy to forget key points. I am sure everyone appreciates how Ryan played and his effort.

Not to say that Ryan didn't deserve to be at the table this game, but he was at a press conference recently, right? Was it the Milwaukee game?

I am just saying give credit where credit is due. He had two really good games playing injured against Green Bay and then against Butler and doesn't the press ask the players to go into the press conference, well that's what I was told?

. I hope you are liking Ryan's shot a whole lot more now then you did when you first saw the video from a couple of years ago. Yes, yes I am enjoying his stroke! I am still baffled how he gets it off, but clearly he does. And when it goes up, it's pretty much going in. I am actually more surprised when he misses than when he makes them. I liken Ryan's shot to Larry Bird's quickness. Nobody ever thought Larry Bird was very quick, but he always got to the loose balls, and drove around people...How'd he do that?

Regarding the stadium... As an alum and a contributor, I cannot back the university putting money into a 10-12K seat stadium. Makes no business sense whatsoever and would never be filled. What I do recommend is putting in an endzone bleacher section on the east side like the west side (i.e. student section) has. That would boost seating to close to 6000 and provide a little more of a closed affect. To justify building a new stadium with a reasonable number of seats (6000) in a bowl configuration, I think you would need to be filling the ARC every game. We filled it for Butler and others - but remember that the tickets in the upper deck are $10 even for games like Butler. The business case flat out does not work right now. Additionally, the university has bigger priorities in order to be a competitive all around school and has done a good job focusing on them (new library, new union, expanded engineering building, new buildings for arts and comptuer programs, etc.). They really need new dorms and student recreation facilities though - when I have visited other schools with my kids it is clear many have much better facilities. There will never be a time when improvements and enhancements to academic and housing facilities will not be necessary. That is a fact of life. If we’re waiting for those needs to somehow be met before we consider improvements to the ARC, improvements to the ARC will never happen. We need to find a solution to accomplish both – just like every other private university that offers D-1 athletics has to do. Filling up the ARC isn’t a litmus test for anything. That’s like a struggling restaurant that hasn’t upgraded its facilities in the past 25 years saying ‘as soon as we find a way of getting more customers, we are going to remodel.’ Business doesn’t work that way, nor does D-1 college athletics. There are no shortcuts to success. Either be willing to invest in your product to remain competitive or quit wasting your precious resources. If the university doesn’t want to invest to remain competitive in the athletic world it signed up for, it should go D-3. Our present facilities are perfectly suited for it. To your comment, "They really need new dorms and student recreation facilities though - when I have visited other schools with my kids it is clear many have much better facilities," I would encourage you to talk to Homer Drew. He will tell you that is exactly what parents of prospective recruits tell him about our athletic facilities. We lose prospective recruits all the time for exactly the same reason we lose prospective students - inadequate facilities in contrast to our competition. And by the way, I would submit that the university's academic facilities are MUCH closer to its competition (and in some cases superior) than are its athletic facilities. Agree 100% with your analysis, wh. There will always be competing needs, and at a private school I recognize it is all about the money and donations to specific projects. But having said that, I would also say it is time to address the roughly 26 year old ARC and bring it up to more modern standards. I thought that should of been part of upgrading conferences. If you want to "step it up" and play with the bigger boys (i.e. Valpo joining the Horizon League), you should also make the commitment to upgrade or enhance facilities to be comparable to your competition. Valpo has done a great job addressing the Center for the Arts, the library, the union, etc. Maybe soon the board and administration can take a hard look at outdated athletic facilities and try to find a way to address them as well.

I am just saying give credit where credit is due. He had two really good games playing injured against Green Bay and then against Butler and doesn't the press ask the players to go into the press conference, well that's what I was told? Believe me, everyone in the local media appreciates Ryan's talent and his contributions not only recently, but his entire career. It is true, the local reporters request players - usually two - and then Homer brings in who he believes is deserving. Everyone has to realize these press conferences are for the local newspapers, and the recent recording of the press conferences is new. In general, the press conference are conducted very, very close to deadline (for 7 p.m. games). Newspaper stories, in general, are not very long. It is not possible to quote more than 3 people in a game story, under normal circumstances. And in a game such as Butler, with so many big plays and so many "heros" it's hard to remember to ask about every detail, and it's hard for Homer and/or the kids to remember to praise everyone on the team individually. I know many of you would like to see a 15 minute press conference with 4-5 players and lots of comments from Homer, but that's not how the press conferences are designed. The purpose of the press conference is to provide comments that the reporters can include in their stories, and it's the reporters' job to sift through the comments and include the best quotes in the stories that are written. As I said, the recording of the press conference for broadcast on YouTube is new to VU. The questions being asked are to get a response that will fit into newspaper stories, not necessarily look good on video. Again, no slight at all on Ryan. He's a favorite of the fans, coaches and yes even the media. He wasn't brought in after the Green Bay game because he was "getting treatment," if I recall correctly. He's been at a lot of press conferences and I'm sure he will be again in the future.

Speaking of Ryan: ---In 10 conference games he leads the HL in 3-pt. shooting percentage at an incredible 59.5%! He is more than 10 percentage points higher than next best. ---He has the 4th highest 3-pt percentage in the nation in conference play. Cameron Jones from N. Arizona leads the nation at 73.7%, but he has fewer than half the attempts Ryan has.

Was at game. Few observations... 1- great win 2 - we should push for a new stadium - a complete bowl that can hold 10-12K 3 - mascot is worse than I thought it could be 4 - just FYI...I walked up to booth and bought tickets for section AA through the window for the "sold old" game (I realize these were probably found late or someone turned them in) One of better games at home since 1988 game against ND (still not sure any home game will ever reach that, can still see Anslem steal and fast break with Jones in closing seconds to send game to OT). I passed on a department Christmas to attend that game, and boy was I glad. I also recorded it and have periodically rewatched the last few minutes of regulation & the OT. That fast break was fantastic and watching it never gets old. I guess that I have to have that tape copied to a DVD so I can keep on watching.

Huh! I wonder what they mean by "our own" Brandon Wood? StatSheet picks the winners but it is the local Valpo version of StatSheet, Valpo Daily (Valparaiso basketball stats and analysis powered by StatSheet) that is reporting the news.

Ah, OK. I see now that they did call Kenney "our own" too; if not Ryan.
